Golden Age Scale Racer Photos
« on: October 01, 2006, 10:43:54 AM »
Here are a few photos of Golden Age Scale Racers.  They are the #37 Howard "Pete", the #36 Carr OX-5 "Spirit of Saginaw", and #44 Wedell Williams.  These models raced two and three up at speeds upward of 95 mph.  Not for the faint of heart.

Under >Additional Options, there is a browse selection that comes up when you hit Attach:

Click "Browse and it should take you to your pictures on your computer.  copy and paste the .jpg file mane and it will come up in your message.  You can do two at a time, then hit "modify" and you can put two more in.

BTW: Did you get my email answer to your email??? Haven't heard back from you.........

Those look awesome!!!!!!!

They look 100% scale, and to think they are raced at 90 mph or more...........wow.

I know the boys from Cincinatti have been involved in those.  We had the planes at a Huntersville meet back in the early '90s.

Sorry about the picture quality, but this was a 35mm print. I tried to scan it but the bitmap image would not post, so I took a digital photo of the print. These models were at a Golden Age race in Cincinnati several years ago. I first heard of this type racing from Geoge McGinnis who I met at the scale Nats several years ago. He is from New England. Jim Moore and John Johnson from Cincinnati (actually both are from Kentucky) got pretty excited about the concept and built several models. I have built a Curtiss Navy Page Racer and two Mew Gulls. We tried profile models to make it easier and you can see three  in the photo. First with Fox .35's as the engine and then with OS .40FP's after too many Foxes blew up. We also tried the .40Fp's in the full-body models. With no propeller restriction they were as fast or faster than the ball-bearing engines on 11" props. I crashed the Page racer in New Albany, IN with a figure 9 loop on take off. Still have the Mew Gulls. John built a Gee Bee R-2 that is on display at a local Jr. High where the team name is "Aviators." FYI all the display models in the atrium are control line, others are from Mike Welshans and I. The school called local club reps and only we C/L guys donated any models.

The Carr Racer is scratch built.  The starting point is a photo in the Book published by the EAA, The Golden Age of Air Racing.  Another photo is at aerofiles.com under the name Carr.  An enlarged copy of the photo, known dimensional references such as wing span, prop size, people in photo etc, historic descriptions such as the use of Travel Aire Mystery Ship components, even shadows in photos of shapes such as wing tips and tail component were used in building the model.

The Carr Racer is a very unusual choice for a model.  Better known planes do have plans available notably the Cleveland Plans and various plans published in modeling magazines and good three views can be found in books about air racing.

My favorite era of plane, especially the racers. Beautiful models. Anyone know of plans for any of these modified for stunt? I have plans for a Bonzo stunter, it's high on my list of what to build next. Any help appreciated. Also a listing of web sites featuring Golden Age planes. Can't get enough of them. Dan Banjoc's Vista is inspired by these racers. Get to see that almost every weekend. Seems to me a few of these tweaked with enlarged wing area might work. (Guess the designs need more than tweaking, oh well.) Love to see an Art Chester or Keith Rider designed plane distorted for stunt, keeping the lines and cues. A Crosly or a... There are rubber scale model plans for nearly all the Thompson Trophy racers available free on line. Even rubber kits. Could start off there, picking up shapes and moments.

Kent:

They're meant to race not just fly!!  Besides stunt guys don''t want to launch them... motors kind of scare them.

Think we could bring this event back around here? Run some races maybe once a month?  I was talking to Tom Luper tonight and was considering building somthing new if we could get somthing going.  Bill Little has expressed interest as a change of pace.

Yes, I wold be interested in building a Scale Racer.  I am working on getting the stuff together for that TEOSAWKI.

Do you have any plans laying around for any of those planes?  I like the Wedell Williams a lot.  y1
