fun scale judging at the Nats
« on: October 02, 2009, 11:01:49 AM »
Does anyone know how they did the fun scale judging at the Nats this year?

Did they do the judging on the Friday before?
Did the judging take longer than 3 minutes per aircraft?
Did they require the documentation package to be formal as sport scale rules?
Did they require proof of paint scheme and color?

Thanks

Fred, I was "chief judge" at the Nats this year, Jack Sheeks was the event director. Fun Scale judging was done Friday along with all the other events. I did not judge Fun Scale, I was doing F4B static, but recall that it was finished very quickly. The documentation did  not come up as a question, but all I would have required would have been a photo or artist's rendition to get outline and color scores. I personally use the cover art on an "In Action" paperback to document my fun scale 1/12th scale Typhoon. I have had occasions when I was asked for a three-view and I then opened the "In Action" to the included three-view. Some documentation of the color (vs a black and white photo) should be available to optimize those points. The judges I have worked with, or been judged by, have been very generous on the Fun Scale scoring.

Fred
The current Control Line Fun Scale Rule

2. Static Judging: The static scale outline score will be a graduated zero (0) to five (5) points to contestants who show proof that a full-scale aircraft of this type did/does exist.  An additional scores of a graduated zero (0) to five (5) points will be awarded if proof is shown as to replicating a color/marking scheme of the original full-scale aircraft.  A single sheet (three-view drawing, photo, profile, painting, plastic kit box, etc.) is sufficient.  Contestant-prepared drawings of (should read or) a photo of the model itself are not acceptable.  If no proof of existence of color/marking is shown, no static points will be awarded.  However, it will be up to the Contest Director and/or Event Director to determine if the Scale model is indeed a  replica of a full-scale aircraft for contest eligibility.

That is what it should be judged to.

Thanks - that is how we ran our Fun Scale event in Southern California back in 1999. Since these are club rules wanted to know how the Nats folks decided to run the event.
