Title: Found hanging in a antique shop
Post by: MikeCoulombe on July 27, 2017, 09:12:06 PM
Over on another forum, I came across this post about a fellow who found this control line Mustang hanging from the ceiling of a antique shop he was visiting.
Anyone recognize this plane?
I must warn you some of the pictures are hard to look at.
It looks like it has spent some time in a damp place.
I am interested in learning more about the retractable gear.
There was a $200 tag on it.

What's the wingspan?   Could be an old Veco kit.

Here is a copy of the original post from the other site, no hint of wingspan.

Wife dragged me into the antique joint today .. and one thing did get my attention.. there was this old model hanging on the ceiling.. but what got my attention was the retractable landing gear.. The engine would appear to have an old gasoline engine due to the presence of a porciline insulator ,, perhaps dating back to the 30's or 40's sometime.. Checking out some pics... it may be an old 1946 type II hard to tell.. if you look at the one pic you will see what appears to be control line wires coming from the fuselage. this along with the engine and the lack of movable controls on the wings would suggest it is a control line model... predating RC.. but now for the really interesting part.. check the pic of the wings.. and see the bevel gears that operate retractable landing gear.. if this was a control line model with retracts... that would be something interesting to have... but !! someone must be out to lunch ,, as the sticker price was 200.00 and the over all condition was very poor.. but still it was interesting to see...

I would be a project to be sure, the landing gear needs to be looked at. Since Builder of the model rules applies except for fun scale you could only enter fun scale with this model.

I might need a full overhaul to get it ready to fly again

Note the homemade throttle soldered from sheet brass & wire.  These seldom worked.

Have a little more info, wingspan estimated at 30-34 inches.
The engine looks like a McCoy glow, not ignition but a glow plug.

The plug looks like a spark plug but could still be a glow plug. Champion V-2s were glow plugs, I believe, and I have several around here some where.  The model is probably early 50's vintage with the components that can be seen.
   Type at you later,
