FCM at AMA?
« on: June 11, 2011, 05:06:44 PM »
Well it looks like I won't make the Scale Nats.  Comming up too soon and I have a conflict with the 4th.  How big is the scale turn out for the FCM @ AMA? What are the fees to fly?  I emailed for more info but have not heard back yet.  This looks like my best shot to go to the AMA HQ this year.

The turn out is obviously less than the NATS.  I think last year there were 8 or 9 models, may have been more but expect about 30 at the NATS.

I guess I will miss meeting you this year since I will be at the NATS, but in Alaska during the FCM Contest.

If the entry fee has not went up then it will still be the exorbitant price of $0.00.

Hi John,
We typically have pretty good turn out at the FCM.  Usually have at least a dozen or so in all the events combined, and those are just Charlie Baur's family! LL~ LL~
In all seriousness, we have enough entries that I don't get done with static until around 10:30 to 11:00 AM.  Scale is on Saturday, then we have a free meal there on Saturday evening, with the all-pilots' drawing during that time.  Every pilot entering is automatically in the drawing, no others can enter, and our sponsors always give us a lot of first class goodies!  This year will have some four cycle engines if I remember right, plus some two bangers, several kits, lotsa other smaller goodies, and a guaranteed good time to be had by all.  Entry fee is $20 or $25, (plus whatever bribes you offer the ED - me)  I haven't heard from Allen yet on that, but that includes the supper, a tee shirt, and the drawing.  I believe additional entries for second events is another 5 bucks and then nothing more for more beyond that.  Don't quote me on that, but Allen should chip in here soon as I'll email him as soon as I post this.
Come on down, we'd love to have you!

Clancy is hanging on to the 10th anniversary entry fee from two years ago!  He judged last year so didn't have to pay.  Maybe I'll charge him to judge next time? LL~ LL~

John -

another scale modeler and myself also have schedule conflict with Nats so we are going to the FCM contest at Muncie, I am bringing a sport, profile and a fun scale model, plus my profile carrier.

Sounds like there will be a respectable turnout.

Also consider the Scale contest in Sept in St Louis, MO

I have gone to St Louis in 08, & 09.  I missed 10 - went to the nats that year.  St Louis is a small contest but run by great people and a really fun contest.   Some photos from the 08 St Louis contest.  That's me with the Extra 300S

Allen,

Hopefully I can pick up an extra meal ticket for Sat evening supper.  Have to feed the pit crew. Do you know what circle we will be using for scale?  Will it be possible to pratice Friday?

Looking forward to meeting everybody!   y1

Hi John,
Don't worry about feeding the pit crew, the Saturday night supper is free to any and all who show up.
Scale uses circle four, and yes, Friday will be open for practice.  Am eager to see you there1
Blessings,
Will

John,
The actual site is the L pad, using circle number four there.  We shut down circle three for the flight judging.  Circle four is the short section of the L pad, and this way you have pavement for the flights.

They run scale a little different.  They have 5 classes of scale.  They run two classes of 509 CL sport Scale - Military & Non Military. Then they have two classes of 521 CL Profile Scale - Military & Non Military. Then sunday they have a 1/2 twin class.  The two years I have gone it has been well run and big time fun!  It's kinda cool because you can fly all 5 events if you desire. #^

Fred, I like it if people bring ugly ships, that way I have someone to park beside!  (They won't let me put my ships in the regular line-up.)

Trailer is packed and my bags are packed SO I will depart for the FCM @ AMA in the morning.  Looks like the weather will be wonderful. With a high of 82 and very little wind predicated all I can say is WOW! Glad to be headed north. Alabama will be pushing 92 - 93 this weekend - no fun for a old man like me.

Here is a picture with Grant Hiestand's 1/3 scale Spacewalker coming in for a landing. This model creates a big shadow! For all who fly electric this model is powered with an E-Flite E-160 with a 9S battery for power and a 22" prop (I think). The electric motor looks like a soup can.

Grant took first place in Sport scale.

I missed the contest because it lost out to an Alaska Cruise & Tour.

I was thinking of how hot it was in Muncie so I found something that would cool you all off.  Just could not find a box big enough to ship it to Muncie in!

350 foot thick, 250 foot above the water plus 100 feet below the water, 2 miles wide and 18 miles long.

I should have added this in my post above.

Two rules to follow when going to Alaska:
A. Lay out all the clothes and cash you plan on taking. Pack half of the clothes and twice the cash.

B. They will tell you to dress in layers. They forget to tell you that the top layer must be waterproof! During our 11 days in Alaska, one day it did not rain!!

Well Clancy, I've never stepped foot on Alaska soil, but I have been with in visual distance of the land mass, and I seem to recall that seawater inlet temp was about 28-29F......Guys would wear their Pea coats down to the steam plant to stand watch....  y1 It was stinking cold  LL~ LL~ and this in a plant that was 112F in the coolest spot in the plant if we were say around Hawaii...  Was a little warmer yet in the IO.

I'm glad you had a safe and happy trip!!
