Another profile scale rule question.
« on: November 05, 2022, 08:13:10 PM »
This question relates to rule 5.2:

5.2. Profile Fuselages.
Profile fuselages and nacelles are permitted in all scale events unless the
rules for the particular event specifically state that they are not allowed.
The scale judges will apply appropriate downgrading of scores for the
non-scale fuselage and/or nacelle cross section for appearance except in
Profile Scale (event 521), Fun Scale (event 526) and ½ A Scale (event
529). The maximum width for profile fuselages and nacelles will be one
(1.0) inches. For upright and inverted engine(s) the maximum reinforced
fuselage and/or nacelle width may be one half (1/2) inch wider than the
engine mounting lugs. The maximum width of the reinforced fuselage
and/or nacelle of horizontally mounted engine(s) will be one and one half
(1.50) inches
(bolding and underlines are mine)

This rule discuses the maximum reinforced width of the fuselage ahead of the 1/4 chord point of the wing.  I think the rule is clear if you are using an i.c. engine with mounting lugs. But it is silent on the  use of electric motors. Electric motors frequently use an "X" shaped aluminum mount which has 2 outside dimensions; side to side and across the corners.

What is the proper use of this rule for electrics?

Congratulations Steve - you identified an instance where the existing rules are not clear for electric powered models.

My opinion - The key issue is "may be one half (1/2) inch wider than the engine mounting lugs".  See attachment for how I would interpret.  Note there are two answers depending on how you turn the x-mount.

Thanks Pete.  That seems to be a reasonable interpretation of the rule and is in fact exactly what I thought it should be.  But before I start making molds I wanted to be sure that there wasn't a different interpretation from the past.
