Fred, Pete.

Im re-reading the competition rules for the umteenth time and there is this one paragraph that I want to be sure about:

f. Except for fixed gear models, retraction of the landing gear
should commence immediately after takeoff, followed by flap
retraction if equipped and used for takeoff. Flaps and/or landing
gear retraction are not required for profile or fun scale models


I interpret that to allow the use of flap and landing gear options in a fun scale or profile scale model

Is that correct?

Whilst retracts and flaps are NOT a requirement ( ie. if not fitted you can't lose / gain points, ) having them fitted should be of no add or disadvantage in those classes - is how I read it!

I used flaps as a scored option on my profile dH Hornet for years and on my fun scale Val.

In general, you get to use flaps as a 10-point option and a retract gear as 20 points, but full marks are NOT guaranteed.  If your flaps and gear move, but not like the real thing, a proper judge will not award the full 10 or 20 points.

In some events, such as F4B and AMA Sport Scale, there is PENALTY for not having retracts on a retract-gear prototype.

If you add flaps and retracts to a profile model it makes it easier to fill out the 6 options

The throttle only single engine model that only has throttle control can use these for the 6 options (sport or profile):

1) throttle control
2) Touch
3) Go
4) something else (45 degree flight, bomb drop, missed approach...)
5) something else (flaps....)
6) Taxi

If you add flaps and retracts then you can do this:

1) throttle control
2) Touch
3) Go
4) flaps
5) retract
6) Extend

The multi-engine model (sport or profile) can do these options, pick the 6 you like best
1) throttle control
2) multi-engine
3) Flaps
4) Retract
5) Extend
6) Taxi
7) Touch
8) Go
9) 45 degree flight

You have more options to pick from, you do not have a competitive advantage just because you have flaps and retracts. But F4B where they expect you have retracts if the full size did then you need to have flaps and retracts.

I count six options that you can do without flaps or retracts and without going upside-down, and three more if you want to get "stuntish".

So even if you're entering a Wright Flyer or a J3 you're spoiled for choices.  More if it's a Stitts.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

The typical CL scale model does not do aerobatics very well so I didn't include aerobatic options you can do as an option. But the full has to be capable of the aerobatic options. In other words I can't fly the B-29 and do inside loops because the model is not capable of that and the full size B-29 would not be capable of a inside loop or inverted flight.

But if you enter an Extra 300 and do inside loops and inverted flight that makes sense.
