And I'm going to try your method of attaching sealing tape to a hinge line.  I usually end up making several messes before I get it right.

That is the way I learned it and it is super easy once you get the hang of it.  I use a 1/2" x 2" piece of 1/16" bass or plywood that I have rounded to about a 1/32 radius on the 1/2" side to push the tape up to the hinge line then use the flat part to press it to both the elevator/wing and the flap/stab.  Gently trim it with a fresh shaving razor and you can't see them at all.  Peter sticks his to the bottom of the wing first, I trim it off..no difference.
