C/L scale handles wanted.
« on: March 15, 2022, 07:29:33 AM »
Michael Smith curator of AMA museum is doing a new section on C/L scale history. He is looking for all kinds of handles we’ve used over the years, both multi line and electronic systems.
Contact me (pm) if you would like to donate.     fcm95@comcast.net
Michael walked me through the new exhibit and you are going to enjoy it, in fact the whole museum is being revamped, world class, Hollywood, Disney like. AMA will give you a certificate of donation in return.
Blessings
Allen

I have a five channel and 3 channel Bill Young handle I can donate.

There also needs to be converted RC car radio converted into a handle on display

The display should also include a short set of lines that show how the insulated lines were made and how everything plugged into the lines

Also need to show how we used a RC transmitter with down the line connectors and a stunt handle. I have some older JR DSC transmitters, then have the wire that plugs into the back on the transmitter, into the lines then into a RC reciever with the channel item removed

Also don't forget the Servo driver single channel setup with down the line and stunt handle

and the ztron infrared system that did not get very far

Back in 2008 I designed and built a 7 channel down the wire control handle for my Extra 300S.  I had planned to build and sell them.  However the cost was going to be too high and I gave it up.   Not too long after that the RC throttle became legal making the ideal obsolete.  Attached is a picture of the control unit and the servos it drove.  I will see what I can dig up and attach pictures of the control unit mounted on the handle.   If interested I would be glad to donate it.
PM me if interested.

I am going thru my stuff to see what I can find that is in good shape

This is the evolution of throttle control for CL scale

1) At first there was no throttle control
2) 3-line was developed, along with the newer glow engines with a carb that became the latest technology
3) in the 1970's or 1980's Steve Ashby and others were converting RC radios to remove the RF boards and make them down the line
4) Things really got going when the information became widely known about modifying Existing RC units to work down the line in the early 1990's
5) Bill Young handle was developed - 3 channel and 5 channel
6) Ztron infrared happened but I flew with it as a test but I had to return the unit
7) other custom control units were developed - Clancy Arnold for example
8- Single channel was done using a servo driver
9) JR DSC radio's were used for down the line with the DSC functionality
10) 2013 - 2.4 Ghz came in making all of the above obsolete - either use a transmitter on the belt or else where or convert a RC car radio into a handle
11) hold the RC car transmitter in the left hand and fly with the right

So many variations on this evolution....but the biggest debate was if someone wanted to fly with a trigger on the handle or not!

Allen,

I mailed my 7 channel handle to Michael today.  I included a brief history of the handle.  Thanks for letting me know about this.  Looking forward to seeing the display in the future.    #^    #^    #^

I will be sending my package to the AMA next week that will include:

Bill Young 5 channel handle

Bill Young 2 channel handle

RC car transmitter converted into a CL handle, trigger used for throttle control. Lines attach to this unit

Servo driver that would plug into a set of insulated lines with a stunt handle

JR radio DSC setup with a short set of insulted lines showing how the transmitter plugs into the lines at the handle end and the other end of the lines plugs into the switch harness with a reciever. again flown with a stunt handle and the transmitter clipped to the pilots belt or hanging around the pilots neck.

There were so many variations of the CL handles that we have flown with that there is not one setup that was common.

My two boxes of stuff arrived at the AMA museum today

1) JR DSC transmitter, reciever, onboard wire bundle these would plug into the insulated lines
2) sample set (very short for display purposes only) of insulated lines
3) Servo driver that hook into the insulated lines
4) 5 channel Bill Young handle with bill young reciever that plugs into the insulated lines
5) 2 channel bill young handle that plugs into the insulated lines
6) RC radio (2.4 Ghz) converted into a CL handle

30 years of CL handle evolution in two boxes!

When I thought about all of the systems that have been out there and what it took to fly with the newer technology I am amazed. I have flown with most but all of the systems over the last 30 years. The other big takeaway from all of this is that a large majority of the new technology was never designed for CL use but it ended up being used by CL pilots for throttle control. So I never look down at newer technology coming out of the RC world because it's very likely that we can use it with our CL models.

One person I know removed the air retracts from his CL scale model and dropped in the electric retracts. So he got to remove the air tank, valve, servo, air lines, the fill valve and just plugged the electric retracts into the receiver. And yet they never designed the electric retracts for the CL scale model.

Hopefully when the history of scale U-control handles display is finished someone will post a picture essay of the event here.  At 82 years old it's likely that I may never make it back to the AMA headquarters.  Just a thought.  D>K

John, I’m sure Michael Smith the museum curator will have a feature in Model Aviation magazine when the display is completed. Blessings

I plan on getting pictures during the 2022 Nats so I can put those pictures into the CL scale column.
