C/L & RC Scale event????? Toledo Expo too.
« on: December 08, 2013, 11:15:03 AM »
I have been in conversation with Mike Barbee and I am "testing the waters" here.
NASA is having a RC scale event the last of Sept. 2014 at AMA for NASA members only. Mike asked me if controline would be interested in joining this scale event. I think it would be a little like the "Nats". I for one thinks it is a great invitation to growing closer to the our RC friends, after all we are all scale modelers right?.
If we could get a yes or no here that would be a great help.

Blessings
Allen

*if we want C/L scale to grow we should support those who are hosting scale events. (Brodak,FCM, Nats, St.Louis, Tuscon and others I'm sure I missed, sorry)

The Layfayette Esquadrille CL club in St Louis has our CL scale contest on Sept 20th in 2014 which is an annual event. This new event would have to be coordinated with AMA contest coordinator so it does not affect this contest. St Louis is close enough to the AMA site that it might under those rules.

Would the contest be held at the same flying field? And if so, how would it support RC and CL. Typically the RC and CL areas are separated by some distance. CL scale folks tend to like fully paved circles which are not found at most RC sites.

At the Nats we run at the same time, static is done at the same location, yet when it comes to flying they are basically separate events. We can see the RC guys flying in the distance but that is it.

This event would be interesting

With 2.4 Ghz it is possible to set up a "Scale" model that can be flown as an RC model and with a  5 minutes conversion flown as a CL model..... that would be a unique challenge, enter the contest and fly in both RC and CL scale with the same model! Let me know if anyone is interested I have the information on how to do this.

Please read first post!

NASA is planing on the last weekend in Sept. The 26th, 27th and 28th, C/L would fly at our normal paved site as we do at the Nats. This would not interfere with the St Louis contest.

NASA members only?  I probably know the answer and don't realize it.  Who is NASA and how do I join.

I have a limited budget and only make 1 contest per year.  Last summer was FCM. 2014 the plan is for the NATS.  However more scale contests is a good thing.

Here is the web site for NASA, National Association of Scale Aeromodellers,

http://www.nasascale.org/

This is the group that runs the CL and RC scale at the Nats

Two items here;

#1; I just talked with Mike Barbee and the Sept. date is probably off. AMA site has been reserved for other events. Date they are considering is 1st weekend in Oct., weather should still be ok for scale flying. So stay tuned for more information on this event.

#2; If you would like to work the NASA booth (4 hours) during the Toledo Expo, NASA will offer you a FREE membership or paid renewal of your present membership. If you have never been to the Expo you need to put this on your bucket list. Check out the Toledo Expo web site to get a taste of what takes place there. http://www.toledoshow.com/

I would make the event open to all AMA members, that way you might get more folks joining NASA

Fred, nice column you wrote for the NASA newsletter, I just read it on line. That should help everyone when considering building a scale model and going to compete in a C/L scale contest.

The "NASA Scale Classic" will be held the first weekend in Oct. and it open to everyone.  I will see if Mike Barbee will come on this site and explain how the event will work.

Blessings
Allen
