Cessna 182, Civil Air Patrol project. pics.
« on: November 08, 2013, 08:36:21 AM »
I was going to keep this under the radar but here it is.
My Cessna 182, I am going with the Civil Air Patrol 182. Here is where it's at with approximately 775 hours in.
This airplane will compete in F4B for now but if the new "Authentic" class is adopted it will go into that class.
Options are; flaps, steerable shock action nose gear, head lights, flashing beacon, markers and a O S 65 for power. This will be my first scale using 2.4 radio. Hope to get some serious work done this winter, my target is to be ready for the Brodak contest in June 2014.
Blessings

The bell crank was specially made for this airplane by Tom Morris w/ bushed .036 leadouts, ball joint and carbon pushrod for elevator control.
Done for now, more pics. later

Looks like a great selection, Allen. The tricycle gear should help a lot. Whose kit is that? I think, under current rules, that the lights are not a judgeable selection. They surely are worth the impression points, however. Can't wait to see it finished.

Hi Allen,What a great subject. The Skylane is a flying Cadillac. That paint scheme is excellent as well. The Ohio Highway Patrol has some very nice looking red, white, and black Skylanes. The tricycle gear will make your already greasy landings even that much better y1 y1 y1.Can't wait to see her done,Jeffery

Update  D>K
I have done rib stitching and put on rivets but this is a first for me. Corrugating elevators, flaps and ailerons. One side of the elevators have the rivets on and I still have the flaps to do. The side glasses are in place and secured and I'm getting ready to spray on the flat clear on the dash.
Here are some pictures from my last 65 hours of labor.

You have way more patience than I do.  I guess that is why I don't build scale and have lousy looking planes.  This plane of yours is going to be awesome.

D>K  Had to take a break from the bat cave, my eyes were starting to see triple. The corrugating is done, 444 strips (elevators, ailerons and flaps) with 1,976 rivets. Started setting the cockpit side panels I should have the major parts in place and hope to carpet it this weekend. Still have some work to do on the seats, fabric, seat belts and full body pilot.
This is the point I have to hold myself back, getting close to paint time I want to start rushing things, sloooooooow down Allen.
After the cockpit its time to think about the panel lines, screws and rivets on the stab, fin and rudder and I have no idea how many there will be, but I enjoy doing them. Done for now.

Wayne, the wing span is 81 in. or 1/5th scale.

81" Wow!!  If you want to go off of the reservation and converted it to RC you could compete in a Big Bird fly-in contest.   LL~   LL~   LL~

Hopefully the wings come off or you will need a custom trailer to hall it.

D>K Since the 1/2A Brewster is done and hanging on the wall, it's back to work on the CAP Cessna 182. Here are the latest pictures. I have been putting on "rivets" and now am seeing them in my sleep. There are three days invested or approximately 20 hours so far, I still have the rest of the fuselage and the wing to do yet. Just finished the wheel pants and just a few more touches in the cockpit to address. Back to the "bat cave". Enjoy.

I know others have their own way of doing this. In the past I used a syringe and white glue on the Ryan STA but I thought I'd try this and it has worked out to my satisfaction. A toothpick and Sig glue and follow the dots, if you make a mistake, wipe it off and apply it again. Labor intensive but that's the price you pay if you want to compete in the upper classes. And besides, I am enjoying it. Done for now.

At last, the 95% finished CAP Cessna 182. I will figure up the hours I've logged in, but I think its around 1,200 hours.
I plan on test flying it when I get back from Brodaks. As in the past with new scale ships I'm a little nervous. Hope to fly it at this years Nats in F4B.
Enjoy the pics.

Allen,
Having flown many 180s this is a very interesting project. The final results are awesome. Good luck at the NATS.

Which Sig glue did you use for the rivets? By the color it looks like aliphatic resin glue???

The Cessna corrugations, as I recall were triangular shaped, does that show in in scale proportions?

I thought that the rudder also a had corrugated surface, but you might be correct.

Congratulations on completing this project.

Tom, you got me to thinking, and I think you might be right, so I scanned up to the picture of the full scale at the beginning of this thread to see, and the bloody rudder is turned away from us so it doesn't show one way or another.  Allen?

Guys, if you google "CAP Cessna 182 walk around" it will plainly show that the rudder is not corrugated.
Jim the paint is Brodak and the clear is DuPont auto clear.

Maiden flight today at AMA, my flying buddy, Roger Wildman assisted me with both physical and moral help. Nervous, hands sweating but it went off and up just like it was suppose to, go figure. Every function worked great, just a little less off set on the ailerons and take off the 2 oz. weight on the prop shaft and it will be fine. We'll go out again next week for some serious practice.
