C47 / DC3 Hobby Helpers Plan
« on: February 12, 2008, 09:47:20 PM »
Getting all things ready to start cutting parts in the next week or so for this plane from a HobbyHelpers plan #1254 circa 1954.  Making some changes of the plans, the types of ribs and general wing construction,  leading/trailing edge of the wing and redoing the fuselage crutch primarily.  Some of the style shown on the plans seemed a little out of date and sort of heavy in some areas.  Am also considering moving the engines/nacelles outward about 3/4" to be able to "possibly" swing a slightly larger prop.  The plans indicate 8/4 props.  Might be OK for the 15's though.

I know the wings of the full scale do have a lot of dihedral outbound of the wing box, it seems to be out of scale (greater) on the planset.  Will have to look at this a little further on when I actually get to working on the wings.  Just beginning on the fuse crutch and formers now.

Has anyone built from this plan  and if so how were the flying characteristics.  The original plan called for Cub 15's or K&B 23's.  I'm looking at either some 15's or 19's right now but am planning to use RC type radial mounts so I can decide after I end up with a better idea of the total weight of the plane.

Just interested in a sport scale plane and not a real detailed build.  Any information would be appreciated.

I have had the plans for YEARS!   I am looking forward to seeing your build since I have never seen one built from those plans.

Still working on a few "redraw" areas and still debating about moving the nacelles out some.  The text on the plans says that they used 8x4 props on the original but I've measured several times and the CL of the engines is closer than 4" from the fuselage so I have no idea how they would have used 8" props.

I'm sure that I'll just end up moving them out, extending the wing box and wing span and making it work.

Hi,  Like Bill, I am very interested in how your C47/DC3 turns out.  Have you thought of maybe doing a profile one first to see how you like the moments?  Just a thought.  Please keep us informed about this project, Thanks and Good Luck #^

Actually thought about that yesterday while I was at work.  I was making cutting templates and considered just doing a profile first.  Ever since I got the plan out to consider a build, I have been a bit concerned that it would be tail heavy in a big way and a profile might shed some light on that issue, at least partially.  Reality is though, that it won't take "all that much more time" (LOL) to just go ahead and do the full fuselage version.  Obviously more money and a lot more finishing time but thats OK.   I do a lot of my work while I work in a guard shack on either second or third shift and there is virtually no one there during those times.  Somewhat inconvenient to haul stuff back and forth but I can get a lot done while there if I choose to.

Just for information, I got the plan last year from the "Uncle Willies" site.  He was offering a free download.  Might still be, haven't been on there for awhile.

The scale engine locations would work just fine if you use (authentic) 3-blade props.

A question on twin engine set ups and a three line BC:  Is a second normal BC driven by the third line (attached to the arm where the elevator pushrod would normally go on the second one), with pushrods running to each engine from that BC be a viable set up?

I have NEVER set up a 3 line BC for twin operation.

Thanks!

Me either, but I'm considering it.

The elders around here recommend a rotating tube made of large diameter brass.  Three horns are soldered to it: One in the  middle to the bellcrank, and one at each end for the engines.  By soldering the horns to the top or bottom, you can get the throw direction you want.

In theory, this concept could be extended to work four engines (or more) with a minimum of moving parts.

I have done a three-line throttle setup in an F5F with 90 degree bellcranks at the nacelles. The linkage is simplified if you take advantage of the spanwise motion of the leadout to the throttle bellcrank. My Hs129 also uses 90 degree belcranks, but thye drive from a single servo in the center section.

Somehow, I have ended up with C/L scale plans for a B-17, B-24, B-25, C-46 and C-47.  The majority are Hobby Helper except the C-46 which is a tracing of the Kyosho, etc., kits.  I even have the magazines for most of them.  (not the C-47, daggum it! LOL!!)

I have, however, seen the C-47 that's on display at Pope AFB many times.

Hi Thomas,

I do not have the HH plans here, they are at home, so I do not know their number.  It is an early looking plan, however.  Maybe Air Trials........
