1992 and '93 Junior Scale winner's model...
« on: November 20, 2017, 04:37:01 PM »
This is Jeremiah McMillin's Focke Wulf 190A-4 that he built at 10 to 11 years old in the early 90's and competed in the Nats in Chicopee, Mass and Lawrenceville, Ill winning Junior National Champ honors.

The model started as a 25 Inch Guillows rubber powered kit, re-engineered for a Fuji .09 RC and a JRoberts bellcrank and a beefier landing gear mounting, it was fixed gear and fairly simple.
He used the cowling, cowl gun troughs and canopy from the kit's vacuform parts and cardboard for the wing intersection, the entire model was sheeted with 1/32nd balsa and tail surfaces were built up to scale thickness and the rudder and elevator are open bay covered with silkspan.
The model was then built up with silkspan and dope. He painted it with a combination of paints with airbrush to get the proper colors for Pips Priller's "Black 1" with the black bird's head on the forward fuselage.
For weight sake the surface details were paint and ink lines. The whole airplane was cleared in dope and polished out to the point of it being near glossy trying to get a scale sheen for a polished airframe as per the custom during the early 1941 to 42 era where the airplanes in these groups were polished to extract most performance plus the fact particular pilots were German aristocracy and wanted a good looking airplane. Priller was photographed extensively with his BMW, fine guns and his FW-190.

I recently took the model off of the hangar wall from where it had been for near 20 years and cleaned it up a little for some photos. Hope you like them, a nice little model that used the old fashioned systems to win the Nats, and Jeremiah was 10th out of 24 in Sport Scale where all other contestants were Open in '93. I am told the new versions of these kits are laser cut which should make them a pleasure to build.

That's a really neat treatment, Chris!  You could use the "purse out of a sow's ear" statement.  It's quite masterfully done and should challenge the rest of us to be more creative with our choices of subjects.
However, I'm just as excited by the MG mug!  (Just bought a pristine '73 in August.)

Really neat story and old model Chris, thanks for sharing. It's nice to see this stuff preserved too, way cool wall art, and with sentimental value.
Narrowly averting disaster since 1964!

I remember when that model was built. Chris was in the St. Louis area for just a few years by that time. Shows what cn be done with one of those Guillow's kits. With today's electric technologies, a lot more is possible especially with the use of 2.4GHZ equipment. I built the big Corsair as a rubber model when I was a kid, and have one of those plus the Dauntless and a few others stashed for "someday".
Hey Chris! When did our kids grow up! ????

Here's mine, Will. I bought this from mom when I was 16 in 1974. She bought it new in 1965. Dan probably remembers me restoring it in St. Louis back when because he was instrumental in my moving it by determining the order of loading the truck.

Yup! I remember that car and the rebuild. I still have an itch for one of the small British cars and have always liked the bug eyed Sprite. I think Bub Brown had one that he ran around the airport in Lawrenceville, IL in. For some odd reason, whenever I was outside near the Jamaican when it was here, I always thought of the blue car! Them was fun days!

Edit to add; I would consider an MG GT, though, if I knew I could get in and out of it! LL~

A GT with a small block Ford and a GM tilt wheel with a 13 inch wheel, perfect for you!

   HMMMMMMMM! Ner thought of that!
Saw a show on TV for a kit that put a 302 Ford in a Mazda Miata. Surprisingly easy to do! That is in the back of my mind also!

Wow Chris, that picture really gets my attention!  When I left the Navy in late '62 I had my '57 MGA, ended up in Syracuse working at the airport and decided to order a new 'B!  I ordered the blue!!
Sadly, I decided to cancel that order because of finacial problems, so never had a blue 'B.  I still love the color, though.  My current ride is white.
