Does anyone know what 1/2a scale CL scale contests are planned in 2017 for 1/2a scale by the Cholla Choppers CL club in Tucson?
Fred

I know this years contest was moved to Phoenix because the Tucson circle used in the past was in rough shape. I would assume this year will be the same but I'm not in a position to confirm that.

I got a question...do they allow the really small electric powered models to fly with the .049s?
-
No such thing as an "electric 1/2A". 1/2A is an engine under 0.050 cubic inches. It's been cheated up to 0.061. But there's NO WAY an electric motor is a 1/2A engine.
Maybe you should pioneer a "small electric" event and see how you do.

Paul, I was just curious seeing that Brodak sells electric set ups for 1/2A sized planes. I thought that maybe they "might" be allowed.
I've got another question...when someone builds a 1/2A twin do both of the engines have to total under .061 OR are two .049 engines allowed? Thanks,PhillySkip

you can use two .061's
-
How about 5...
-
Yea, as many as u want as long as they are no larger than .061 y1
-
Thanks guys...that 5 engined bomber is sharp!
-
The two pitmen were not amused with five engines spitting fuel all over them. Right, Eric and Burt????
-
Yes Ron, for 10 min I thought you were beating a dead horse BUT, 30 sec shy of a no fly you brought it al together and all those little half breads all sprang to life for a great flight. Eric

I think that just might be the neatest experience I have ever had as a judge of ANY competition class! H^^ H^^

leave it to the Race Guys , are u bringing it back this year
-
How about 5...
THAT is COOL!!! y1
-
Bring it back????? I'd need to find two pitpersons that don't mind a 25% nitro shower......
ps: Will - Thanks for the kind words.

You get a bonus for TWO engines. Nothing additional for more.
So what would the judges award if 3 out of 4 or 4 out of 5 were running?
Certainly, the contestant achieved the two engines and more.
More than two engines has a BIG coolness factor, but no advantage in scoring. A judge would be remiss if he gave more than the proscribed 5 points per flight for multi-engines.
But would he be justified in taking off points for less than all, but still two or more running?
-
The actual 1/2A Scale Rule:
6.5.2. ½ A Scale.
The flight plan shall consist of three (3) required maneuvers and (1) over all judgment (realism in flight) listed in sequence. A maximum of ten (10) points is allocated to each of these four flight plan elements. Airborne laps have one point is awarded for each lap completed with all engine(s) running up to ten (10) laps. The four (4) taken together have a maximum award of forty (40) flight points. Five (5) bonus points are awarded for multi-engine models, provided the additional engine(s) run during the majority of the flight, but excluding landing. The maximum number of flight score points is forty-five (45). The maximum flight scoring of two flights is 90 points.
1. Takeoff. 2. Ten (10) Airborne Laps. 3. Landing. 4. Realism and Smoothness in Flight.
Pretty well spelled out...
-
So that decodes to:
If he has five engines he needs to have ALL FIVE running ten laps to get the 5 points.
-
That's the way I read it. S?P
-
There was a guy with a nice 4-engine plane at The Brodak, but he could only get three to run. He flew all his flights on three. So I guess he didn't get his 10 multi-engine points, even though he had more than one running.
Maybe he could have still done OK if he used another option in lieu of multi-engine.
-
How about actually reading and understanding the rules: "Five (5) bonus points are awarded for multi-engine models, provided the additional engine(s) run during the majority of the flight, but excluding landing." During the one and only flight at the 2014 NATS, one engine quit when a fuel line came off late in the flight. All FIVE engines ran through the "majority" of the flight.
Paul - I typed this real slow so you could understand it.
-
I just got up so maybe I could deny this later in the day. What if I could come down to Tucson or maybe even Phoenix and pit for you (again) and Burt living down there already, I just know he would jump on this offer? I think I forgot to get my coffee.

Does anyone know what 1/2a scale CL scale contests are planned in 2017 for 1/2a scale by the Cholla Choppers CL club in Tucson?
Fred
Fred's question was about the Tucson 1/2A scale contest. This is really the 1/2A CL Multi-Engine Profile Scale contest that was originated by Mike Keville nearly 10 years ago. The rules were originally for profile models but were modified several years ago to allow full scale fuselages. Profile models are allowed and the rules are set up much like the AMA rules now for 1/2A scale such that profile models can compete with their full scale counterparts. A good profile model can outscore a "not-so-good" full scale model.
The Tucson rules can be found on the Tucson Cholla Choppers website:
http://www.ccmaconline.org/2016%201cc%20meps%20rules.pdf
Score sheets used for these events are also on the Cholla Choppers website.
The rules require two engines. One of the flight bonuses is to have three or more engines. (No extra bonus is earned for more than three engines.) The rules limit the displacement of each engine to no more than .061 cu in or 1cc. From the above rules regarding the flight scoring for the engines:
"All engines must be running at release.
"A flight becomes official when the model takes off and completes the first lap with all engines running.
"One point will be scored for each airborne lap after the first lap with all engines running for a maximum of ten (10)
continuous laps including takeoff without touching the ground."
The Tucson rules provide for two classes: Unlimited Class for throttled engines and Limited Class for engines with no throttles. The contest also includes a 1/2A scale event for single engine models.
There have been several 3-engine models and several 4-engine models entered in these contests.
Because of the problems with the paved circles in Tucson for these 1/2A models, this contest has been held in Phoenix the past two years and will likely be in Phoenix or near Phoenix in 2017 (probably early October).
Models can be shipped to Arizona and proxy flown. There are competent experienced fliers in the area to fly these things if the builder cannot attend the event. In past years, there have been several proxy flown models the have won trophies.
