Hello all,
We run 1/2a scale here in the St Louis area and are trying to get a copy of the rules that are currently being used around the country at other contests.
To date I have figured out that 1/2a Scale is currently be run in these areas...I would love to know if I have missed anybody.
Milwaukee Wi
Brodak
St Louis
FCM contest (Muncie)
Nationals
Tucson
I have an older copy of the FCM, Nats and Brodak rules (Nats 2012) which I believe they are all the same rules, let me know if that is wrong
I have a copy of the Tucson rules
We are looking at our rules for the St Louis contest and would like to compare our rules to what everyone else is using
Thanks,
Fred Cronenwett

In Milwaukee, we used the rules published on the brodak site.

I think they are OK, except they should explicitly state if electric models are permitted or not.
We had a very small turn out this year, but several members are building and pledging to have stuff for next year. We are making it the focus of our winter meetings.
I would really like someone to consider allowing the use of Spectra lines in this event.

As I read them they are the same as the rules used at the NATS. Also as I read it - no electric - and I think that is a good thing. Half the fun of 1/2A is dealing with a wet engines. I am not against electric in general. I have an electric scale and stunt ship. Love em both - but 1/2 scale I would hate to see electric.
PS Spectra lines should be legal for all 1/2A contests. All lines have to pass a pull test so what is the big deal
-
no they are not, only in combat right now.
I suppose I could get the CD to add it to the local rules, but in general they are not permitted.
5.3.5.1 Spectra Lines.
Lines made of Spectra fiber, made of gel spun ultra high molecular weight polyethylene are
permitted for sport flying and demonstration purposes. Spectra lines are not permitted in competition
unless the specific rules for the event flown expressly permit such use

We had 3 entries in 1/2a scale here in St Louis and have no plan on dropping the event....Too much fun.
I have confirmed that the Milwaukee, FCM, Nats and Brodak all use the same rules (Brodak rules)

1 cc Engine. What could be clearer?
-
Although the rules posted say AMA scale rules for lines, I am pretty sure some fliers at Brodak used Spectra.
-
Why would it become "Brodak Rules" when Uncle Mikey started the event in Tucson?
-
Nobody said they were Brodak rules, Did they? they are just posted on the Brodak Flyin site.
-
Yes you can have "local rules". But this is the first time in a long time that more people, not just people who have been scale for a life time, are starting to look at building a scale type airplane that is also fun. It would be a shame if someone was to build one these unique airplanes and find out that "local rules" prevented him from entering. It could happen to1/2A scale some time in the future.
We have seen this in some of the racing events.
Although there is always something to argue about, the stunt pattern is still a constant and participation is very good.

After reading the Tucson and brodak rules they are very similar and allow for a nice simple fun event. All of the rules including the St. Louis rules say .061 size engine and don't over complicate the rules. The Tucson rules can be found at this web site.
The Tucson rules have the unlimited version that allow throttle and 3 options during the flight

Fred,Why is there no provision for a 1/2A electric equivilent in the rules.I have a Guillows B-25 that would work out great with 2 ot the Brodak 1/2a setups.Thanx,Trax

That question comes up often.
the challenge with this event is to deal with the small glow engines and see if you can get them running and get 10 laps in before one of them quit
the majority of the folks I have spoken with want to keep electric out these rules

What Fred said. 1/2A is all about the engines. Besides the very term 1/2A refers to an engine displacement. You simply can't have an 1/2A electric speed ship going for the 1/2A world speed record. I am not against electric, I fly electric stunt and scale but 1/2A is not an electric event.
-
Have separate event for the electric powered planes, it there are enough people to warrant it. I like the challenge of IC engines. 1/2A has to be the most challenging.
-
I would like to electrics included in the 1/2A event. Although it is not really fair to compete with glow motors, especially 1/2A's. Unfortunately I don't think there are enough people doing small electrics to get enough participation.
-
A small Scale model would look pretty goofy with batteries and that ugly wiring hanging off the front end.
If others want to try it, good luck. Sure isn't going to happen at Tucson's "1/2A" (1cc) event.
-
Are twins .061 x2 or combined max. displ. .061 (1cc)?
-
.061 x 2 (or more).
That displacement figure is a 'max'. We still see some .049s, .051s...and one which used .020s.

Mike,
I think the question was about total combined displacement. So, to clarify, the maximum displacement for any one engine is .061 (1cc)

Hey Mike,
Electrics don't have to look like spaghetti farms, check the electric stunt forum. The 1/2A scale plane I have been flying ( 2 X .061) has plenty of room to put all the bits and pieces inside if built as an electric.

Yeah, that's what I meant.
