1/2A Brewster pics.
« on: December 30, 2013, 05:25:14 PM »
Here is the 1/2A Brewster I designed and hope to have it completed in a couple of weeks. I hope to fly it at Brodaks, Nats, FCM and some other 1/2A scale contest in the Midwest. This is three days work.

Blessings

Beautiful...absolutely awesome.  Now design & build some kind of twin and bring it to the Tucson meet in October!

I love Brewster Buffalos ... might be the prettiest and ugliest fighter of all time.    Did anyone ever build a 500 sq in stunt model ?

What do you do when it's -14 degrees outside and 8 inches of snow with a forecast of -20 to -30 degrees and 12 inches of new snow and 30 mph winds? You stay the heck inside and work on you models! Here is my update for Fri. I hope to shoot primer tomorrow.

For you 1/2A buff's, will a 1 oz tank be to much or to little for a Brodak .049, for a 3 minute flight?

I like your plane! The sheeted wing should be good and strong. I think I like better as a profile, too.

That is going to be oe good looking plane when you get the details on it.  Now as far as tank, one ounce should be plenty.  If too much remember you can always short tank it.

Allen, I'm anxious to see the landing gear...Love the subject, and the choice to do it in profile.

Very nice Allen!  One ounce on a .049 should be good for 5 or 6 minutes flying time.

D>K The Brewster is now ready for clear, waiting for panel line and decals to dry. Pictured are the landing gear. I feel like I've just finished a much bigger airplane, more work than I first figured. More when the engine is mounted and it is finished. Enjoy.

That's a super cool little model Allen. y1

I have to admit that I'm wondering though, why aren't the stars white?

Look at the decal sheet in the background -- he would have had to paint white circles, then do the decal over the top with perfect registration.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Yep. I'd noticed that Tim. I'm wondering why he didn't lay the white down first, the talent is obviously there.

I have had the same problem I used another solution. I buy the white decal sheets that has the backing you pull off to expose the sticky side. I put the decal on these sheets (white side) then stick these on the model.

If Areas on the decal need to have the color on the model come thru then this solution does not work.

Even when you paint the background color makes a big difference on how the color comes out

I have had good results with white vinal deacl material.

http://www.texascraft.com/hps/Waterproof-Adhesive-Vinyl/

It does have a fuel proffing problem but clear over spray seems to slove the problem.  I used a ton of them on my LA-5 project but it is electric and fuel proffing is not a problem.  They are heavy compaired to water slide but easy to apply.

The decals look worse after they dried. New ones are in the making. To much work to have this to bit me at "static" judging at the Nats or anywhere. Learn as you go, good teacher in life.
Thanks for all the kind words.

Zounds, Allen!  Landing gear detail and panel lines make this Buffalo look like a much larger airplane than a 1/2A! Canopy and pilot are First Class.

Decals are the final-final. Thank you for the great pix!

Done...again, just flat clear coat to spray. Charlie saved me with the new decals, thanks.
Now its time to clean the shop and get the 182 back on the bench.

Last years project a 1/6Th scale (Jerry Bates plans) and this years 1/2A (my plans) both scratch built and a plastic model. Just a note on the plastic model, a great way to see close up the details you might miss on 3 view drawings and pictures.
Last of the pics.  n~ enjoy.
