08 Nats classes?
« on: August 14, 2008, 01:46:57 PM »
Does anyone know what classes and how many per class were flown at the 08 nats?  I am particularly interested in the Stand off Scale and the Fun Scale classes.  Also I see that the control line scale contest that is being held at Valley Park Missouri has two classes of stand off scale - Military and Civilian.  Is this normal?  Probably all dumb questions but I am new to all this and am trying to get a feel of whats out there.

SPORT HAD 10, FAI HAD 5 OPEN 2 JR., PROFILE HAD 6 OPEN 3 JR, FUN HAD 9 OPEN AND 1 JR.
Due to wind and flight order I decided to save the KI 83 for Tucson. The ama rules requier 52.5 Ft lines and the wind was just a little to strong on Saturday. Sunday was not any better. I did however get the engines running great. The idle was the problem and one plug was bad.

I take it then that sport or stand off scale was the biggest groupe. Am I also correct in assuming that all types of aircraft ie military and civilian are grouped togather in sport.

John, I am pretty sure that for the last few years Sport Scale has had the largest number of competitors. It looks like Fun is growing however. Yes, military and civilian models fly in the same event.

I was one of the static judges for Profile. I did not see the scores that my compatriot was giving, but Dick's Ki-83 was a exceptionally well done model. Hey Dick, I saw something when I looked at your model up close that I could not see in the dark armory during judging--check on the location of your elevator mass balances.

Thanks Chuck. But you were not suppose to look close up LOL. I wish the AMA rules would allow shorter lines on .061 size engines. Due to the weather conditions I just could not make an attempt on 52.5' lines. I guess I could have cheated and used shorter lines but then I would not have a leg to stand on when I complain about a few other's that, shall we say, BEND the rules.

No Dick,
You were right to do it the way you did. Otherwise you would have cheated.
Chris...
BTW, At Tucson there is no 15 feet during static. The model is held and handled as the judges look 'er over!

I know. That is why I have to correct a few things. Thank god the line requirements are only 35 feet in Tucson.

The older circles there were repaved with elevated rings from the 47 1/2 foot mark to the outer diameter only. I put Michael's P-38 on 48 footers and it was very marginal.
There is a new circle that is flat, but I don't know how they will be chosen. My plan is to go down to 35 to 40 and be well inside the ring. Plus his model has 049 Norvels instead of 061's and needs the help.

Chris, Dick, et al. ---

Tucson's October 11-12 contest (1/2A multi-engine profile) will be flown on the new, flat asphalt circle.  No "donut rings" to worry about.  Use whatever line length suits your fancy!
