Margaret June gets a makeover
« on: March 16, 2021, 04:18:45 PM »
This is the original Margaret June Sportsman Goodyear from the construction article in Model Aviation. She suffered a bit of damage last October, and generally needed to be freshened up. I went in a completely different direction, but actually retained the fuselage trim lines. Pic's show before and after. The color scheme is based on the iconic Gulf Oil Co. Lemans racing cars of the 1970's.

Tell us about the spin-er-age (spinach?) on the nose. Whuzzat?

Allus love them baby blue schemes. I got that on my Clownages. Goes good with either red or orange....  Nice.

I'm not sure of the origins of that particular spinner. I had it in a box of parts for years. It's possibly a Picco or OPS. The Supertigre "B" spinner is very similar. It is 1 1/4" diameter, slightly bigger than the G-15 spinner. The backplate fits the same tapered cone as the ASP 15. I bought several from Mike Hazel's "garage sale". The stock nose nut is 1/4-28, so I had John McCollum make 7075 aluminum replacements with 5mm threads.

Thanks, Bill.  Sounds like a "brew yer own" deal. I'll have to check to see if any of my wood rasps are still sharp.....

Mecoa sells some small sizes of (formerly CB Assoc.) plastic spinners that work well, and Brodak's 1 1/4" needle nose aluminum spinner also does the trick. See the June 2019 and Feb. 2020 issues of Torque Roll for additional info.

22 sec, fastest ones low/mid 21's. One local guy ran a carefully fitted Fox (with internal leadouts and .012 solids) that would hit 20 flat on a good day. Magnums have to run .015 stranded and external controls. The Magnum is a small case engine. It has the same mounts as an OS 18TZ. BTW, a TZ on a sport Goodyear will do 17 flat!
