Title: Super Fly SSR almost done
Post by: Bill Heher on April 07, 2011, 01:04:35 AM
Well it's taken longer than planned ( don't they always? ) but the Super Cheap Super Fly is almost done. Fill a few dings, add some hard points for tank mounting and gear, cover the wing and final assembly, then see what happens..

Entire plane was built in my hotel room, using hand tools and borrowed plans. Almost all wood from the $5 bargain bin at CLC.  Fuse is as stiff as a baseball bat, so it should hold up to pit catches - if I can manage to whip it to the pitman!

OS .25 FP for power, built from 3 different engines and mix-n-match to get a nice piston / liner mated to a crank that runs smooth and true in a low time crankcase.

Looks good Bill, glad you finally figured out which side the engine is supposed to go on.  n~ HB~>

Yeah- it's amazing how a simple thing can get ya distracted to the point where you can't see the simple answer.

On the plus side- you can't even tell with the inboard tripler. It feels kind of porky, but should last for a few races! Finishing the wing now, may have it covered and glued together for Sat meeting.

Getting close!

A good, hard (heavy) chunk of wood for the fuselage can be a good thing in a Fox/SSR. It helps with the stiffness and strength, and you need some weight to help you whip it---especially in the wind. In fact, the only place you suffer from too much weight is in the acceleration on that first lap. Not nearly as important as being able to get it back into the pit regardless of where it quits or how much wind you have.

How do you glue the wing/fuse joint?

Wing to fuse - fit / fill cut-out to allow wing alignment, wood to wood  - double glued joint with Titebond or slow set epoxy.

I agree that getting the plane back to the pitman and having it durable enough to survive a hard catch should more than make up for any speed / accelleration loss due the weight.

Heck - 1 landing on the far side of the circle w/ average condition ( as in my case sore, stiff and slow) pitman will just about kill your chances if the other guys make good pit stops.

I'm thinking about making the fin/rudder out of ply, the tailweight won't hurt, and if I dowel it through the stab into the fuse, it will make for a good solid tail stucture.

Hi Bill

Looks very Good.

Don't forget to put a canopy on the model somewhere. It needs one to be race legal.

Uh ...... no.

Only Slow Rat has that requirement, not Super Slow or Fox Race.

OOPS, I did have Slow Rat rules confused with SSR rules.

Finished it up tonight- ran the engine this morning, good fuel feed and needle response and nothing fell off! Fin/Stab are doweled into fuse w/ carbon tubes. Came out very solid and straight.

Finish is 99 cent " Quick color" spray can from Lowes - made by ROC ( Rust-Oleum Company), on fuse / tail. Wing is Litespan stuck on with clear dope and shrunk with the hotel iron and hairdryer.

Looking good.  Hope it goes as fast as it looks and the pit man can get the 1 flip starts.   H^^

Forgt the pilot has to get it to the pit man in one peice. LL~ LL~
