SCAR Goodyear
« on: February 08, 2017, 11:38:05 PM »
Anyone have know rules for SCAR Goodyear? I know I've seen them but can't find 'em now.  The SCAR website (if it ever existed) is also AWOL.
Ron?, Bill? Dave?, Anyone?   Also, does the SSR event flown at the Narrows follow the NCLRA rules?  Thanks in advance. 8)

This is the latest version I have. Don't know if it is current.

SCAR SPORT GOODYEAR RULES - 2002
OBJECTIVE:
The objective of this event is to provide a forum for team racing competition that allows for
racing with relatively simple and inexpensive, yet realistic appearing, profile models of actual
[racing] aircraft. The Supplemental provision for "ALL SCALE AIRCRAFT" is included for fun
and not intended to give a "RACERS ADVANTAGE". Please participate within the basic intent
of the rules.
Revised supplemental rules for 2002, item #2. Basic Model Rules
1. Basic model rules governing 'profile', landing gear, scale and accuracy and cheek
cowls as per the AMA Scale Race class. This includes painted canopies, race numbers and
AMA numbers.
2. Supplemental rules t2002]. Any scale aircraft may be entered in this event as long as the
following criteria is met. This allows for "Warbirds", Racing Biplanes, Civilian Airplanes, Crop
Dusters or any other "Strange Aircraft" that you may wish to build.
A. All divisions of rule #1 apply to all models, except for (1/8 scale'
B. Minimum wing area must be 150 Square inches. Bi-plane wing(s) area total is min. 150
sq. in.
C. 3-view drawings may be requested by the Event Director. Burden of proof is on
competitor.
D. Stabilizer/Elevator may be increased to +25% of wing area.
E. Scale landing gear per the AMA rules definition will be enforced.
3. 1 ounce maximum size fuel tank.
4. Fuel shutoffs allowed.
5. No pressure refueling systems or MFV's. All refueling to be performed through a
maximum 1/8 inch I.D. tube.
6. Fuel tanks cannot be recessed into the model.
7. All controls (bellcrank, leadouts, pushrod, control horn) must be externally mounted,
although mounting of bellcranks through the fuselage is permitted.
8. Models must be constructed of wood. The use of carbon fiber, glass fiber, Kevlar and
the like shall be limited to reinforcement and/or finishing of the model only.
9. Lines shall be 52'-6" +/- 6" from center of handle to the center of the model. Minimum
line diameter shall be 0.012 for solid, 0.015 for stranded.
10. Models and lines shall be pull tested to a loading of 25 pounds prior to competing in an
event.
11. Any engine may be used that did not have a listed retail price exceeding $150 U.S. as
of January 31, 2000. Proof of retail pricing lies with the competitor desiring to use a specific
engine by presenting evidence showing:
(a) General availability (published advertisements, etc.) at or below the stated limit.
Or
(b) In the case of an older engine, a dated advertisement at or below the stated limit.
12. Organizing clubs may opt to limit an event to diesel or glow engines only. It is
preferred, however, that events held as part of a
sanctioned competition, or, events that are open to non-club members, shall allow both
diesel and glow engines to compete.
13. Glow engines shall be restricted to a maximum of 10% nitromethane in their fuel.
Organizing clubs may opt to provide standard glow and diesel fuel at a race.
14. The organizing club may use either of the following race formats: [set time or set # of
laps]
A. All races to be 15 minute moto's. No final round, with the team recording the greatest
number of laps being declared the winner of the event.
B. Heats of 7.5 minutes shall be used, with the 3 teams recording the greatest number of
laps in the heat races racing in a 15 minute final. The team recording the greatest number of
laps in the final shall be declared the winner of the event. OR
A. 100 Lap preliminary heat (1 heat only) No mandatory pit stops required. Top three heat
times proceed to final.
B. 200 Lap final. No mandatory pit stops required. Fastest time wins.

Thanks Bob, I think I'll stay with SSR and (planning on) Sport Goodyear, Dallas rules. Sounds less confusing. 8)

Those events both interest me.  I have an airplane ready for an engine.

Maybe if somebody has already done the research they could just list the current approved engines for each of the two events.
I've seen a few posted rules, but I don't dare guess what the current thinking is.

In this age of soft data, the concept of a "published price" is hazy.  Back in the day it was a matter of looking at three magazines.

As mentioned before and elsewhere, Paul, the Dallas Sportsman Goodyear rules are published on the DMAA website at DMAA-1902.org . The rules include the identity of the allowed engines and the restrictions on them that must be applied.

Also mentioned before is that Melvin Schuette (MBSModelSupply.com) is now handling the ASP engine and also has needle valves and legal venturis.

I won't/can't speak to the SCAR rules.

Bill

As someone who has entered both SCAR Goodyear, and DMAA Sportsman Goodyear, I can say that both have their merits.

SCAR Goodyear by its rules, is more for the purist type of racer who favors as few event restrictions as possible. I especially like the option of being able to use a variety of engines, glow or diesel, and I like the no required pitstop rule in conjunction with the 1oz. tank rule. That combined with the 100 lap heat and 200 lap final, it's easy to see that it was meant in some fashion, to be a stepping stone towards either F2C, or F2CN. While few racers progressed into those FAI events, SCAR Goodyear has remained one of the most contested events at SoCal racing contests.
Last year, I missed the one contest I used to attend in CA. and fly SCAR Goodyear. A drop in participation reduced the contest to a one day event. If they are somehow able to bring it back to a 2-day event, I will return. I really enjoyed the SCAR Goodyear event. All the guy's down there are great as well.

My first contact with DMAA Goodyear, came last fall in Texas, When Paul Gibeault and myself wreaked Havoc on a rather unsuspecting Crowd Of Texas Racers. Well not entirely unsuspecting, they knew we were coming... Anyway, I read the DMAA rules, found an engine I had that was actually legal to use, and jumped into the fray. If not for the unbushed Conrod siezing on my Norvel BigMig .15, things may have been better. The racing was relatively close; the 80 lap-160 lap heat/Final a bit odd in this day and age, but it was a fun event to enter and was very well contested. As we flew the heats, one thing became obvious...the pace of a DMAA Goodyear airplane is definitely more subdued than the usual crop of SCAR Goodyear entries.  However, It is an event that seems to work great in their area, a little tamer speed wise than what I'm used to, but all in all, a great beginners event. I somehow ended up bringing a Magnum .15 back with me...

Cheers, Les

Well, after attending last weekend's racing event at Whittier Narrows I'm in the process of building a SCAR Goodyear that will also be eligible for Sport Goodyear should I ever make it to a Dallas contest. Great group in SoCal, learned a lot, had a blast, and got thoroughly schooled in SSR. 8)

Pete,
Thanks for coming down. That was a fun day of racing with a decent turn out. It was great to see Jim Holland, Doug Meyer and son and Dave Braun, along with the usual SCAR suspects.

Mike
