PDK Mockingbird SSR kit update
« on: May 03, 2017, 08:52:03 PM »
I am currently building a PDK Mockingbird SSR and evaluating the kit. I decided that I wanted to use internal line connections on my model, so I made two changes to the wing. First, I moved the bellcrank mount to the front side of the spar. This makes the lines exit the wing straighter. Second, since I wanted to access the line buttons from the bottom side of the wing, I turned the spar and ribs upside down and built the wing with a suspended bellcrank mount rather than upright.

Pat has changed the design of the ribs to reflect the forward bellcrank position, and as before, the wing can be built with either the upright or suspended bellcrank mounting depending on how the parts are oriented.

As an FYI, the cable in the outboard wing will go to the fuel shutoff. Since it connects directly to the bellcrank, it has to be extremely smooth and free moving to not create drag in the control system.

A small extra belcrank in the outboard wing instead of the long cable might be an alternative for the shut-off link.

Also wonder why there isn't a slip joint in there somewhere so that the shut-off link doesn't move except when the down control is used.

You're right. A simple reversing bellcrank through the center rib would have been better and easier. I may try to retrofit something.  H^^
But keep in mind the post was actually about the bellcrank mount!

PDK= Pat D King, the person who made the kit
Mockingbird= the name of the airplane
SSR= Super Slow Rat , the event for which the plane was designed

True enough, but the fuselage dictates that the internal control horn be on the bottom. The internal pushrod won't have much room to flex.

Ready for fillets, then paint. Z-poxy finishing resin and 1.5 oz glass on the wood, Fibafilm (like Micafilm) covering. Finish will be Klasskote. Should be ready for the NATS.

I have a stash of Fox and Veco bellcranks. When they're gone, I guess I'll have to make my own.  ???

I just finished my Mockingbird. I actually built it dual purpose, for AMA Slow Rat AND Super Slow Rat. It has interchangeable engine mount plates and fuel tanks. This is the AMA Slow Rat configuration. It has a Weston UK (Webra) 25. I have no idea if it will be worth a darn. Most of the time, it will have a Brodak 25 for SSR.

26 oz as SSR, 29 oz as AMA SR. 1st in SSR, 2nd in AMA SR at the NATS. Plane flew well, everything worked "right off the board" as they say.

.340 venturi, 4mm spraybar through the center, box-stock, one tank ground run before flying, maybe 6 tanks flown before racing. Only tried two props so far. High 17's. Steady running, good starting. Lots more potential to be extracted. Just wanted to get it working first.
