This is my new Sport Goodyear, Margaret June. For you air racing fans, this plane was previously "Bullitt" and "Cool Runnings". I just shot primer on it today. To try to stir up interest in this event for the 2015 NATS, I am working on plans and a construction article, hopefully to be published in Model Aviation. If they don't want it, I will make it available myself. I am shooting for having everything done by the end of the year.

Bill getting ready to put venturi and needle valve that I got from you in Houston in the magnum 15 any tips for spraybar position or breaking in.
-
Point the hole straight down the throat of the venturi. We break in and fly with the same prop, the APC 6.5x5.0. If you can't get one locally, any 7x4 will be OK. You don't need a slobbery rich, slow break in. Run at a rich two cycle then lean it out for 10-15 seconds at a time to heat it up. I'm sure you can find a more detailled procedure somewhere on StuntHangar.
-
Awesome. Hope MA picks up your work. It would be nice to see a C/L racing build for a change.
-
Plane looks great. I need a new Sport Good Year. I'm still trying to get some engines also. If MA doesn't pick up on it, I would like a set of plans. Thanks DOC Holliday
-
I'm with Doc. Not much racing around my neck of the woods but that plane is so pretty I would build one just 'cause I like flying fast, cool airplanes. Put me down for a set if MA passes (maybe if it was made out of cardboard or styrofoam they might show more interest). ;D HB~> 8)

Progress is being made.
-
Looks good Bill looking forward to the article is the lil quickie AMA plans a good one for this class?
-
The Li'l Quickie is a great airplane. That is what Don Cranfill and Richard Oliver fly. The Plum Crazy Cassutt from Flying Models (mid 1970's) is another good one. It already has external controls, and a shutoff similar to mine. You can't go wrong with either one.
-
Are The plum crazy plans available?

Ron, the plans Bill posted above are the Plumb Crazy Cassutt plans.

go to: carstensbookstore.com, order plan CF 301.
-
More progress. I may even try a few ink lines...
-
too nice to race you need to be real carefull ,dont land too hard and bring it to the pit man real easy so u dont ding the wing S?P
-
What are you saying, Bob? You sound as if you know me (and Mike too!) :-*
-
probly longer than u realize, u still have my 1st nats F2C trophy LL~
-
What kind of hinges are those?

What kind of hinges are those?
As shown, the hinges aren't hinges. They're music wire "staples" to hold the elevator during painting. They will ultimately be 1/2A dacron flying line sewn hinges.

Do you mean the time Fast Freddy ran out of the circle before the race was over?
-
Looking forward to seeing pictures of it assembled. I would like to see the B/C setup.
Thanks
Wayne

This is a different airplane, but the control system is the same. I am using the same hex shaped buttons to connect the lines to the bellcrank as I use on my carrier planes. It has been previously described in the carrier section.

thats the one ,if it had been anyone but fred, Garner probly wouldnt have said anything but such is life n~
-
Bill, thanks for the picture. Nice install. You do great work.
Wayne
-
Well I didn't want to mention names as I think he was upset also that he had a brain f--t.
-
Is that considered an exposed bellcrank if the rules say it must be exposed. Thinking of doing something like that on a proto but didn't want to risk a DQ.
MM
-
there is a diff between exposed and extrenal

MM
Walt, the rules for Sport GY are quite explicit regarding the control system. I don't know what the proto rules say, and I certainly would not base a proto model on the Sport GY rules.
Regards,
Bill
From the DMAA website:
MODEL SPECIFICATIONS FOR MAGNUM/ ASP ENGINES ONLY: Lines may attach directly
to the bellcrank, or leadouts may be used. The bellcrank and leadouts or lines must be external to the
normal contours of the wing. The line/ leadout guide(s) may be inset into the wing, but shall cover no
more than 1/2" of the lines or leadouts. The bellcrank may pass through the fuselage but must be visible
and not fully enclosed. The pushrod and elevator control horn shall not be recessed or enclosed in the
fuselage. Fuel shutoff linkages are exempt from any of the above regulations.

The airplane is done, the article is done, now I just have to finish the plans. Weight is 21 oz, preliminary balance looks good. First flights are tomorrow.
-
Hope it is as fast as it looks.
-
Man, that's a beauty! Makes me want to build a Goodyear even though I don't have anyone to race against.
Jim
-
Build one! Lead the charge. Stir up some interest. Better yet, build two, hand someone else the handle, and there you go, instant race! If you really want to get 'em hooked, let the other guy fly the faster plane!
-
hmmmm... I want to race! Haven't flown a race sine i was like 16.. sport goodyear eh?
-
Come to one of our contests. We always need pilots. Of course if you want to build one of your own, so much the better. Talk to Allen DeVeuve. He was going to team up with Lester to fly some racing, then Lester got busy with a new job and a new baby. Allen wants to do the pitting, so if you want to fly you can probably get something going.
-
Say Bill, any chance for details on the fuel shut-off? The ones I use incorporate a separate on a "U" shaped aluminum bracket and the cable activited trigger is on the top. This set-up looks cleaner, lighter, and just as reliable. Can't make Dallas to race but there are still a few guys in the SF Bay area doing it. 8)
-
It's super simple, and made from easily obtained materials. The drawing is lifted straight off the Margaret June plans. Don't be confused, though. The last picture is a different airplane.
-
Thanks Bill, that's brilliant! I will retro-fit one to my Super-Fly Fox racer. 8)
-
Ah, back to basics. I still remember the crude ones we tried before Kevin Seaton came up with his.

Thanks for one terrific ride. The pilot looks so relaxed.
-
Bill,
Look fantastic. The graphics look great too.
-
I just got off the phone with Jay Smith from Model Aviation magazine. The Margaret June construction article will be in the June 2015 issue. %^@
-
Congrats Bill!
-
Margaret June is now online. Go to modelaviation.com and search Margaret June. The complete article is available for those who can't wait for the magazine.
-
Just read the article Bill - great job. I would love to see more C/L racing stuff in MA.
-
Just printed off the article after reading it. Now to get plans ordered. Very well written and a great guide for getting one built and ready. Thanks from the old DOC.
-

Just got my plans today. Bill did a great job on the plans and the article. Now to get in gear.
-
Glad to see a racing plane article in MA, congrats. How fast does it go?
MM
-
85"ish". Today I turned an 8:38 for 160 with 3 pits in Houston. Good enough to win. ;D
-
Way to go Bill. Were you the pit or pilot?
-
It was the world famous "Biscuits and Gravy" racing team. I was flying and Mike Greb was pitting. Sorry we missed you guys last week because of the weather.
-
Before anybody gets bent out of shape, that picture was taken in Dallas during a practice /picture-taking session, and that's why Mike was not weaing a helmet.

Margaret June on the course practicing for the Air Race 1 event at Lleida, Catalunya, Espanya.
