Title: LA-25 Sport Racing at The 2017 Brodak
Post by: Paul Smith on February 07, 2017, 08:21:53 AM
I have submitted the rules to the CD.

This year we will be using the same equipment as the 2015 & 2016 100-milers.  But this time we will do the usual local series of 5 mile races followed by a 10 mile final.

Unlike Brodak Foxberg, this event will be run on the paved circle with fuel shutoffs.  I will make every effort to run all races 3-up.

The only exception to the published Toronto rules that any mass-production molded plastic 8 x 6 prop will be permitted.  The rules were written about 15 years ago and the specified prop has gone off the market.

If Mr. Brodak is correct there will not be another swarm until 2033.

how about a wooden 8/6 prop

No wood, fibreglass, carbon fibre, epoxy.

But you can use any mass production name brand plastic 8 x 6 prop.  This not a prop-making event.

The event started out with just specific prop, but the event outlived the specified prop.  So now you can buy any prop you want. Or use one from your stash.

Just a reminder.

We will be having LA 25 Sport Race at The Brodak on Thursday morning.

The same equipment as the 100-Miler, but we will be running the standard 5-mile qualifiers and 10-mile final.

In general, the planes are typical sport racers with LA-25's and off-the-shelf props.

In the previous two years, all six entries proved they could go 100 miles.  The final champions are the Barnes family team who did the 100 miles in an hour and 22 minutes, shattering all previous times by a big margin.

This format will allow nine teams to complete in the same circle time as three doing 100 miles.

It all depends.  Will you be entering?

How about posting a pitcher of this sleeve?

To be on the safe side, send me two or three so I can be on the lookout for anybody who tries to mess with a sport event.

at the risk of digging up old dirt....were my ABC sets outlawed? They were stock timing, just the materials & fits superior. I guess it would explain why there has never been any further requests for them. Nobody ever mentioned it to me.

We say "stock LA-25".  So replacing any of the parts would be in violation.

We allow metal backplates to replace the common RC backplates and replacement NVA's.  There are at least two different OS venturis in addition to the RC carb that could locked open (a bag idea that I've never seen done).

Up until this thread I had never heard of an alternate pistone' y cylindre.

So, how'd it turn out?

We had three airplane owners who each double-entered with different planes & pilots for a total of six teams.  We flew two 3-up five mile qualifiers and a 3-up ten mile final.

First - Team Canada, Doug Blackmore & Lenny Bourel
Second - Team Florida, Dave Hallas & Bob Whitney
Third - Team USA, Mike Palko & Paul Smith

The best race average speed in qualifying was 67.4 MPH.  In the ten mile final it was 64.0.

Brian

The combat fliers use them for speed limit. They would be great for that even.

How come a Team USA guy is wearing a Canada shirt? Is he just a "Pawn"? Did Canada rig the race? I demand an investigation!  S?P

Michiganders get alone with Canadians just fine.  It  sure beats our other alternative.
This is a Canadian-rules event, eh?

After about 14 years The Toronto Balsa Beavers phased-out the LA-25 Racing event.  I think the event at this year's Brodak ws the final race of this event.

We ran the 100-miler two years ago at Brad LaPointe's suggestion.  The one-time demo evolved into three years, but we only got three entries per year.

I believe I have the option to run another event in the Thursday morning time slot.  I am considering other ideas, not necessarily Racing.  There is already plenty of Stunt, Scale, Combat and Speed.  That leaves a special carrier event like NW40 or some other racing event.

Dallas or 'Brodak' Goodyear?

Anything is possible.  How many entries do you expect this would draw?

I was hoping for more than the three we got with the LA-25.  We doubled up with three plane owners and showed six entries, but only three brought equipment.

Is the Dallas engine currently available?

The ASP 15 is available from me or MBS Model Supply. I buy mine from Ali Express out of China (sorta like Chinese Ebay). I buy enough at a time that I can sell them for a reasonable price.

The Dallas Sport Goodyear would be a good event if you their rules and stay with them.    H^^

The Dallas Sport GY rules withOUT the grandfathered "old" rules.

I'm keeping an open mind on this.  The key question is how many people would enter.

If I used an exiting AMA-legal Goodyear with the specified engine, would it comply with the rules?

Perhaps. It depends on how the AMA-legal GY was built.

Assuming the "grandfathered" rules are eliminated, the big sticking point would be where the controls are placed. A typical AMA GY would have embedded controls, Dallas Sport GY requires external.

Also a couple of other points (line size and max tank capacity) might be a problem switching an AMA GY to Sport GY.

As Doc suggested: study the rules.
