Gentlemen ,
I was thinking about building Cal Smith's "Ole Slippery" and was wondering what might be a suitable (modern) engine replacement for the K&B .29 , or the McCoy .29 engines ?

The Brodak .25 is good choice. The O.S. 25 LA and FP are good choices too. Then there is the TT GP .25, the Brat .25 and .28. Even the Norvel .25 "Big Mig" version will work as will the "AME" ball bearing version. I've used a GMS .25, and am currently developing an Irvine 25 Mk3 for "B" tr use. The plain bearing .25's will get you at minimum, as much speed as the old McCoy's and K&B's had "in the day". The ball bearing engines, even more.

Rob, if you happen to reconsider and would like to fly Cal's "Ole Slippery" as Cal designed and flew it, the K&B .29 greenhead is almost always available on Ebay and is a very user friendly and powerful old time engine. I have eight of them myself, some in like new condition. Seven of these came from Ebay sellers, several at between $22.00 and $30.00 plus shipping..................The K&B greenhead .29 was my first "big engine" back in 1954 and is one of my favorites along with the Fox .29 and Fox .35 stunt. It was originally mounted on a Guillows Trixter B-C profile stunter.............those were the days!............TDurrill y1 H^^

That was my initial goal , was to build it as the original.
I see the second E-Bay listing calls the engine as a glow engine , but I see a spark plug hanging out of the head ! ::)
I might have to try the "Bay" and see what I come up with .

Hi Rob,
I haven't looked but it could easily be a Champion GLOW plug. I have several of them and a few other companies (Veco did) also made glow plugs with the porcelain insulators. If it doesn't have the points assembly, etc., showing then it'd probably just one of those glow plugs.

those old glow plugs are sought by engine collectors. a local car club member has a spark plug collector and ahs a few ib his collection.

Hi Tom,
I have picked up quite a few of the old Champion and Veco glow plugs over the years. I have a Champion in my Veco/Allyn .35 which I hope to use in OTS sometime next year. ;D A few are still new in the box. Now, they are getting pricey!

Webra .25GT/.28GT/ OS .25F/.28F. I have an ole Slipery finished with Enya .29 plain bearing. Have a Abel Mabel with OS .25F and Challerger with OS .25F. The newer design and made for modern engines and quite a bit more complex, but ya need to finish. Dan

A "little" late, but if you haven't gone with a K&B .29GH then the Webra .28GT would be my second choice. VERY strong engine! (I have run at least three of them w/no problems at all)
A "standard McCoy .29 Red Head would never be my choice for any racing or speed plane. The earlier ring rear intake versions were fairly quick, though, and the ring will last much longer than the piston/sleeve in the later Red Heads. One lean hot run and it can easily be toast.

Over here in England one favourite engine for this sort of thing is the Enya IV, 5224 on c/case. Comes in BB and bushing versions.
