How do I make a custom TQR tank?
« on: June 05, 2019, 06:55:53 PM »
I need a tank for my TQR (Texas Quickie Rat). Obviously, there are no commercial tanks of this type available.  I have searched YouTube, and the NCLRA newsletter "Torque Roll" for guidance but have not found any.  Can anyone direct me to old articles, etc about making custom metal tanks?

What metal to use and where to get it?
How to make end caps that fit and don't leak.
What type of lap joint to make?
What type of solder?
What shape/ design and internal plumbing?

Etc, Etc
Thanks in advance.

I can tell you everything you need to know, or I can make one for you for $20.00 (maybe less if we can talk about IF1 racing).

Hardware store K&S .010 easy solder tin or Brodak sells great tank material.
Hardware store 60/40 rosin core solder.
Make dummy plug out of wood & submerge it in graduated  cylinder to check tank volume.
Volume for TQR is about 4 ounces.
I like overlap seams rather than tuck it in.

Best tip- take Bill up on his offer to build you one. It took me years to get good at it.

Hey Tim, you can also calculate the volume in cubic inches, then convert to fluid ounces. One ounce = 1.8 cubic inches.

Hey Tim, you can also calculate the volume in square inches, then convert to fluid ounces. One ounce = 1.8 cubic inches.

Do you really need 4oz for TQR? I would think 2oz would be fine.

I make my tanks about 3 oz. This is enough to go 70 laps. It gives you lots of latitude in when to pit.

Tim S,
Your tanks look great, could you post a plan an profile view of the tube locations in the tank.

Gary,
I've made many tanks for stunt and found K&S 0.008" tin plated works really good and saves some weight over the 0.010". I like to use Stay Brite solder it is stronger then 60/40 but both work. Use copper tubing not brass as brass can develop cracks from the nitro.

Best,   DennisT

Here is the TQR tank design that is essentially the standard for the event.  June 2007 issue of the Torque Roll
