Great news for Sportsman Goodyear flyers
« on: December 03, 2024, 03:11:11 PM »
Mike Greenshields of mikegoesflying.com has confirmed that they are having the Magnum line of engines produced again!  #^ Straight from his mouth (well, fingers actually), the 15's should be ready around January 2025. No info on pricing yet. They used to sell the Magnum engines after Hobby Shack went under, but now they're getting them made again, supposedly by some of the same folks who were involved before. Line forms behind me.....

Once upon a time I flew the Magnum 15 r/c in SIG doubler racing. Wasn't the fastest but ran great. Think I won a trophy once.

Is that the one he calls the SH .15 or is this something different? Says the SH .15 is in stock on his site.

Thanks,
MM :)

Giffy,  the old Nagmum Bloohead was different than the S&H Greenstamps motor. The Blooheads worked pretty good in a specified-engine event. Which is probably why Bill is excited....

What Dave is saying, as only Dave can, it that is the blue head Magnum XLS 15, not the SH 15. Ready in January, and no pricing yet, are also clues.  ;D

Was looking on NCLRA for this. Do you guys use the Dallas rules?

I see the SH .15 can use a bigger venturi than the Magnum. The Fox 15 can be modified, chrome plated with a custom head and conrod with no venturi restriction? Am I reading that right?

It has rules for MAg/SH/ASP control system but anything goes for the Fox engine?

Sounds like the Fox 15BB really needs some help.

The Fox 15 BB is "grandfathered" in the rules. They were the engine to run "back in the day". Then the quality became very hit-or miss, and the event really declined. The Magnum and ASP blue head engines were introduced as an available alternative 10 years ago. The .250 venturi size was selected to give similar performance to a good, but not necessarily great, Fox. The stock engine requirement and external controls requirement were added to make the event a bit simpler to get into. Then the blue head engines went away, and the SH 15 came along. We ultimately decided the SH needed a little boost in the power department, and increased its venturi size to .266. The SH has never enjoyed the success or popularity of the Magnum/ ASP, so the return of this engine is a good thing for the event. The Fora Junior is another engine we are considering, but supply issues are obviously a problem at the moment.

All that being said, a good Fox would still win. Interestingly, even the local guy with two very fast Fox airplanes prefers to fly one of his ASP airplanes.

His pitman is glad, too. :-)

Do these engines fit the same mounting foot print as a Fox/Rossi/Nelson/Cox. I've got a couple of old GY racers maybe I'll fix one up and see how it goes with my trusty old Fox 15. What lap times am I looking for?

The Fox mounting pattern is the same as the engines you mentioned. Depending on the version of the Fox prop drive hardware on the engine, it may be a little shorter than the other engines. If you can run in the 21's, you're there!

The ASP/ Magnum engine mounting is different. It matches many of the 12-18 size car engines, including the OS 18TZ.
