What models and engines are legal for the foxberg class. and specifically in the Tucson area?
Thanks

Hi David
Try Burt Brokaw, he lives in the Tucson Area.
His email address is: lecreit_At_msn.com
Remove the underscores and add the @ in place of "At"
Cheers, Les

Goldberg made the Shoestring/ Buster and Cosmic Wind as sport stunt planes. they later became Foxberg. combine any of these with the Fox .35 stunt.

Not quite as simple as that, Dan. Different areas have slightly different rules regarding what you can and cannot do to a Goldberg kit. As an example one area requires absolutely box-stock configuration for such as rudder offset, leadout position, etc. whereas others allow those to be modified.
It behooves the competitor (David in this case) to contact the organizers wherever he is wanting to fly to make sure what they can and cannot do and still be legal. Les' suggestion for contacting Burt is excellent advice.
Another excellent source is on the NCLRA website, http://www.NCLRA.org At the bottom of the main page is a section called District Pages. The Dallas and Wichita rules can be found under the South Central link.

Burt is good guy to contact in Tucson. I know him well and got a bunch od combat stuff from him. S/W Regionals is coming in Jan of 2012. and later in March Cabin Fever.
I think they both have Foxberg. I think clown racing has over shadowed Foxberg. Foxes can be stubborn on restarts. 35's anyway.

This Excerpt is from the Wichita rules under the District links on the NCLRA site
Note #2: The Carl Goldberg profile stunter kits now permitted are Shoestring, Cosmic Wind, and Buster. Also included are the Brodak’s Buster and Shoestring, also the RSM Miss Sarah (Cosmic Wind)
I was aware that the Buster from Brodak was not the Goldberg repro but was not aware this was the same for the Shoestring. I had heard that Brodak had the rights purchased for another set of sport scale stunters of these Midget planes prior to acquiring them for the Goldberg Series. I had also read somewhere that the Goldberg Buster had a Zilch Wing for that reason.
Does this mean that the Cosmic Wind by Brodak is the Golberg kit but with much thinner plywood doublers and lightweight leading edge?

Got part of it right. One of the first kit makers Brodak purchased the right to was Control Line Classics. Two of their most popular kits were the Oriental and the Buster. These are still in the Brodak line up. while the Buster may not be an exact copy of the Goldberg Buster (it has cap strips on the ribs, the Goldberg did not) it was very close and certainly did not have a Zilch wing. Mine is hanging in the garage and still gets flown occassionally. I think the Brodak versions are very true to the spirit of the originals. Shoestring is probably the fastest but the Buster gets my vote...naturally. 8)

Hi Pete,
Good info. I haven't been able to find the thread that had the Buster claims that were partially correct.
So per the Kansas rules this is what the list should look like then.
Carl Goldberg - Shoestring
Carl Goldberg - Cosmic Wind
Carl Goldberg - Buster
Brodak - Buster (formerly CLC)
Brodak - Shoestring (Goldberg derived with lightened leading edge and doublers)
Brodak - Cosmic Wind (Goldberg derived with lightened leading edge and doublers)
RSM - Cosmic Wind Miss Sarah
My Cosmic Wind from Brodak has 1/16th doublers so I thought I would go thicker for racing as well as a solid leading edge. Instead of the stunter style lightweight one. The below rule excerpt has issue with this however.
b. The engine mounts and plywood doublers may be lengthened rearward for strength, but they cannot be thickened or thinned.

I doubt that anyone would object to you increasing the doublers to 3/32" since the Goldbert Shoestring has 1/8" doublers. Are you sure the Brodak kit doesn't include two sets of doublers to be laminated together? Just a guess as 1/16th sounds a bit skinny for this design. Anyway, I'd bet that if you build it you will be welcomed to the racing community regardless of the width of the doublers. 8)

Hi Pete,
There was only 1 set in the kit and they are thinner than I would have expected. However for stunting/sport with a nice LA-25 I am sure its the ticket. A vibrating Fox is another story though as you well know.
It appears that the Brodak Foxberg rules allow for more choices.
EXCERPT: Must be a stock Goldberg "Shoestring", "Cosmic Wind", or "Buster" built from either a kit or as a direct copy of a kit. Brodak's ,Buster , Shoesting, Cosmic Wind, Lightning Streak, Flite Streak or RSM's Miss Sarah" and the Top Flite ARF Flite Streak are permissible.
Even here I have seen a Mustang race which initially confused me as I thought it was a Goodyear event.

Must have been to let the entrant race for experience. Wichita used to let Ringmasters compete until you got a legal entry built. At first it was called Shoestring Racing as that was the only legal kit allowed. Also at the first the entrant had to fly his own plane. Maybe Bigiron will jump in here and tell of some of the stuff they used to do. Like one practice race was, all races three up, could not use same pit stop/person on each pit. I bet that got confusing to the pilot and pit man. H^^

Doc, I found this information in an old post to some racing results. (LA25 stuff.. not Foxberg) Its relevant to this thread.

Great to hear it is working for you. When Shoestring racing was started in Wichita Ks it was guite popular. Only other plane allowed to start was the Ringmaster, but, only til you got your Shoestring built. Main requirement was entrant had to fly their own airplane and we still do. We are fortunate enough to have people that know about how to start a Fox 35 Stunt. Having fun, DOC Holliday

The Wichita KS rules have always had the three Carl Goldberg Profile Stunters permitted. They are the Buster, Cosmic Wind, and the Shoestring. All have very close to the same wing area and the same amount of fuselage side area. We also allowed their clones by other Manufacturers. Once we DID allow an entrant to enter a Ring Master (S-1) . I don't remember who it was.
The planes had to be built PER the plans INCLUDING the 3/8ths inch rudder offset called out on the plans. The leadout guides could be moved closer together than shown on the plans, but the mean had to stay as per the plans---ie you could move the rear leadout forward, but you had to move the front lead out rearward an equal amount. All planes had to run the same tank and fuel and all had to run a box stock Fox Stunt 35 engine. The stem of the needle could be cut off and bent over to avoid broken needles in the event of a nose over during landing. most entrants utilized the Shoestring due to its appearance---BUT The cosmic wind was a low wing setup and the verticle CG was above the leadout guides and that made for some tilt out during flight that resulted in a little more drag (loss of some speed). The Buster was easiest to build, mid wing (good) but the wing, being constant chord and flimsy construction led to its being easily warped (speed loss due to warpage)
I will say this-- many races were won by Busters (Harold Sprague and Doug Harris from OKC ) Also some were won by Cosmic winds-- (David Denny From Potwin KS My Number one son. and currently Joe Gilbert from Tulsa OK) So The original INTENT was quite effective in maintaining an equality that equated out into the fact that "getting one's act together, learning one's equipment, and PRACTICE is what wins races.
I have been accused of "going to the factory and hand picking my engines" That is a LIE. I have hand picked my COMBAT engines but NEVER a stunt 35, I usually bought mine from their $10.00 reject boxes. Unfortunately they no longer have that availability and I just order like everyone else.
I intend to soon write an article on racing for Control Line World Mag. It will be mainly about Foxberg racing.
