All other things remaining the same, would a foam wing Clown be legal?
Joe

Joe, probably not, but.....
I don't know how the guys in the Northwest would rule (they often do some weird stuff! :) ), but under the NCLRA rules, it's basically "If you can't see it from the outside, it's legal." Now, given that NO Clown kit ever had planked wings, or planked leading edges, or..., it would be very difficult to make a foam wing without it being "visible". Best read the NCLRA rules closely: http://www.NCLRA.org

What if you simulated some cap strips to give the appearance of ribs?

I'm pretty sure it's not legal. Even on the off chance it was, you would still need a leading and trailing edge of wood, and probably some spars to give the foam some strength. In the end, what have you gained other than excess weight. The Original PDQ style of wing is very simple to build (ie. center planked, with solid shaped leading and trailing edge with uncapped ribs and sheet balsa tips) I doubt it could be done simpler, and lighter with foam. I used 1/16 ply center planking on mine, it makes for a very strong wing joint that survived a full power crash in Tucson a year ago.

I would say, ABSOLUTELY NOT legal by Brodak rules.
I wonder why anybody would bother with engineering a foam copy of such a simple wing. It would certainly trigger a protest you couldn't win.

Go read the rules on the NCLRA site. Must be a PDQ kit or a replica. So I would say foam wing is out, period. D>K

Maybe, just maybe, that person was one of the the INVENTORS of the original event...

As Paul stated in a way, the initiator of this post I thought was one of the originators of the Clown Racing in the NW. I still have a double kit that used to sell/manufacture. H^^

If so, Paul, why did he even ASK the question?
-
I dunno, I guess you should ask him... Inventors of events are curious & often inovative people. They like to ask questions. I'm the wrong guy to ask however, I've never built a clown racer nor currently own one.

Joe, if that job comes through, it might be negotiable.

If the "kept foam" system that Tom Dixon initiated is used, then only a crash would possibly show the difference........ sheeted LE, cap strips, sheeted TE. Tom even cuts the foam out between the ribs (cap strips) using a soldering iron.................
