Clown Race at the Spring Contest 2013
« on: May 22, 2013, 06:03:15 AM »
River Rouge Park, Detroit, Michigan May 17 to 19, 2013

We had a nice three-up Brodak-style Clown Race Saturday afternoon.  Everything was going well until about six minutes into the race there was a bit of a mixup in the center.  Bad news: one airplane crashed.  Good news: two didn’t.

1st   Paul Smith flown by Brad LaPointe              228 laps
2nd   Mark Warwashana flown by Ron Colombo      216 laps
3rd   Ken Towers pitted by Ed Brzys              82 laps

Some people on site got to see close three-up racing for the first time.  After a good bit of close racing they got to see that’s it’s not so easy.

Of course this happened on the first "hot" day of the year . It was about 86 in the shade which was 20 deg. hotter than we were used to .Back down to the 50's this weekend .

If all planes are about the same speed it is easy.  Have to remember that the faster airplane has to pass over the plane it is overtaking.  Also pilots need to talk to each other when over taking.   What's bad is when the faster plane is over taking one and the engine quits just as it is about to come down in front of the other one.    Flying with the Wichita group we used to try and stack them three high, one on top of the other for several laps just to get the crowds attention.  We have done at least six up several times with no casualties.   Sure keep a pit man busy when there is only three of us pitting tho.
