4-1/4" from Melvin at Toledo.  You could call these "5 inch" based on the OD.

These are a lot bigger than the 3" commonly sold with lines.

The white 3" spool holds 1000' of .015's.

I asked a local guy, that was one of the first I ever talked to about 3D printers , if he could print up parts for a reel that had a divider in it and in a bigger diameter, and the files here is what we came up with. You could probably just leave the center divider out if needed. We made to width the same as the narrow SIG line reels because I have a good supply of the clips and they are the same as what Melvin Schutte sells also. The diameter of the reel is in the 5" range I think. I was on a kick at that time about winding up my lines and keeping them from twisting together and then unrolling easier. I'll try to attach all three files for all three parts.

PS: Well, I see them, some one tell me if they are viable or not??

Thank you Paul and Dan!

Dan, I'll see if I can modify those files in order to add the features of the reel I'm looking for (the one in the photo attached).

Thanks again and best regards,
Claudio.

What us the cost printing these vs the $6 that Melvin gets, including the all-important spring steel clip?

Well, in my case the difference could be high, as I live in South America, Argentina, so there are shipping costs involved, wich are not cheap.
On the other hand, as I can see in the pics, the reels that Mr. Melvin provides are not the ones Im looking for.

The clip can be perfectly printed in 3D as well, with some aditional thickness to the material.

Anyway, thanks a lot for your input.
Claudio.

The picture looks like the old Pylon Brand and then Brodak line reel. Those sure were kind of over engineered, really heavy plastic and look like they could hold 20 times the line that they need to! I had that in mind when working with the guy that whipped these reels out. They are big enough to do the job but not too large. Let us know how it works.

Thank you.  I understand that shipping can be a huge factor.

In general a one-off process such 3-D printing or laser cutting is very slow compared to injection molding and die stamping.  For high volume production, molding and stamping is more cost effective.

I am still curious about the cost of 3-D'ing a part such as a line reel.

Exactly, Dan.
The blue reel you see in the photo is the one I'm currently using and they work fantastic for me. In fact, I use them since 1998...I bought them (line + reels) from Stellar Specialties.

Define "cost".  Cost of material? Cost of machine time?  Cost of setup?  Hourly rate for post processing?

Those things are all part of the equation of 3-D vs a factory made part.
Of course, if there is NO factory part, 3-D wins by default.

Cost of PLA is $20 a spool. To print one reel is nickels. (We don’t make pennies anymore)
You can find 3D printers on FB for less than a Ben Franklin.
The learning curve is quick with YouTube. So I would say for less than $120 you can print several sizes and stacks of reels of any color. The up side is you can print a lot of other things. Motor mounts, weight tip boxes, battery mounts, cowls. The list is long.

Well I did make a mistake on one detail I had my friend make the assembly to use the bigger line flips like SIG used on their wider 4" line reels. I'm sure you can find a work around for that if making them as designed. I guess as long as you have the basic file you can modify any part that you want to make the reels any width you want??  Good luck with the project,
