YAK 9 RACER
« on: September 08, 2018, 01:24:36 PM »
We have the Jerry Who Memorial race every year at our AAA contest. It is a race using stock Fox 35 Stunt engines on one of several stock old airplane designs. Ringmasters, Flite Streaks, and Yak 9 airplanes are some of the eligible airplanes. The fastest airplane this year was a Yak 9. Upon investigation that is logical, the Yak 9 has a relatively thin wing and a small wing area. The Yak 9 has 85% of the wing area of a Ringmaster, and 81% of the wing area of a Flite Streak. This prompted me to design a YAK 9 RACER. The airplane is NOT for OTS or sport flying. With all the Basswood that the RACER incorporates it is probably as heavy as an original built from an old Sterling kit.
The Yak 9 RACER is a laser cut kit with CAD plans. The plans show all parts full size.  The YAK 9 RACER has a 40” wingspan and 323 square inches of wing area. The YAK 9 RACER has a Basswood leading edge, an “I” beam shape main spar, basswood trailing edge extensions (flaps), Basswood horizontal tail surfaces, a Basswood Vertical stabilizer, and an aircraft Ply Rudder. The Fuselage is a sandwich of ¼ Balsa core and 1/8 Basswood skins. The inboard wing tip is a sandwich of a 3/32 Basswood core with 3/32 Balsa skins. The outboard wingtip is a sandwich of a 3/32 Balsa core with 3/32 Basswood skins.
The airplane is designed to be strong and tough to withstand rough pit stops. The kits sell for $120.00 plus shipping 3 pounds from Zip 60449
Full size .pdf files of the plans are available for $5.00
