OWS SSRAT

This is my interpretation of the Super Slow Rat rules. The airplane has 305.6 square inches of wing area, the wing is 1 1/32 thick. The wingspan is 28 5/16”. The outboard wing is covered with 1/32 ply. The inboard wing is covered with 1/16 balsa back to the center of the spar. The laser cut kit includes all the laser cut wood parts, the 1/32 ply wing skin, the 1/8 X 1 Aluminum for the landing gear, a 4mm screw and nuts for the axle, the sheet and strip wood for the airplane. The plans are CAD plans with all parts shown full size. The kit does not contain any control system hardware. The kits will sell for $110.00 plus Priority Mail shipping from 60449.

Glad you're designing and kitting racing planes but, isn't there some rule about wings being 1" span of each other?

"Airplane: The wing must have minimum area of 300 sq.in. and a minimum thickness of 1 inch when measured at any point along the span, with the exception of the last 2 inches before each tip. Additionally the airplane must have a minimum length of 22 inches when measured from the thrust washer to the hinge line of the elevator. In board cheek cowls are permitted. Airplane must ROG, one wheel configurations permitted. Airplanes are to be of the profile type."

I don't know much about the rules, but seeing this SSR plane as a kit actually makes me want to try it. It doesn't look any different than asymmetrical speed planes. I like the looks of them.

I did a batch of kits of the SS Rat for a customer. After looking at the rules (posted by Dane) I thought this might be more competitive.

Mr. King, the plane you recently kitted for Charles is my design. I'm not sure what your arrangement was with him, but I would not be opposed to seeing this kit being made available to everyone. I have won the Nats with it for the last two years. Please PM or email me to discuss it if you desire.

I think you'll find with such a short span you'll have less lift and the plane will fly nose up and plow through the air making it slower. Ask me how I know, span = lift.

Very interesting. I really like the cheek cowl into the wing.

Btw, why is it called super slow rat? I always watch the racing guys while I'm flying speed ( or recently combat ). It's pretty exciting.

The event is "Super Slow Rat" since it morphed off of the AMA "Slow Rat" event via an NCLRA event called "Fox Race". If you compare the events, you will find that the major difference is that SSR engine is constrained to a lower performance: i.e., plain bearing/stock vs. "anything goes". Performance is on the order of 20mph slower, event is flown 3-up as pilot/pitcrew/timers dictate whereas Slow Rat is 2-up due to the increased performance.

Rules are all available at http://NCLRA.org for SSR and other NCLRA events, and at http://www.modelaircraft.org/events/compreg.aspx for the AMA events.

I agree that a higher aspect ratio wing is more efficient than a low aspect ratio wing. I don't know that the OWS SSRAT is low enough to be high drag. My Super Saucer is 22 1/2" in diameter for 383 square inches of wing area. It does not fly at a noticeable angle of attack, and glides surprisingly well. You may be right, this may be slower than the SS RAT.

After some communication with Bill Bischoff I am revising the OWS SS RAT to be more like the airplane Bill competes with. I will post revised airplane in the next few days.
