wing covering and finishing aerobatic model F2B
« on: December 26, 2024, 02:18:16 PM »
Hi Guys, it is my first time here, I'm Masimo an Italian modeler.
After 40 years I started again to build and flying u control. I build 2 models wity an old enya 19 and now I would like to build and fly an old Italian kit from Olympic the Mustang P51, wingspan is 45.6 in lenght 32,3 weight 25.4 oz.
My problem is covering and finishing. I would like to avoid plastic material like oracover now is crazy expensive and I would like to know how the modern aerobatic F2B models are covered and finished. Any suggestion or link is greatly apperciated.

Greetings, Massimo. Welcome back to lifetime addiction known as control line.

Many builders are still using the old tried & true silkspan & dope method, although many have upgraded to polyspan (dress lining material - treated much like silkspan but many times more puncture resistant; only downside is it takes more dope to fill).

Go to YouTube and search for StuntHanger, which is run by our very own Sparky. He's in the middle of a finishing series using silkspan and dope.

Oh, one other update you may be aware of is the use of automotive paints and top coats in place of dope (still a dope substrate up to colors).

There's also epoxy paints that are very durable. Expensive, but then it doesn't take much to seal the wood and provide a good surface & finish, so per plane cost works out well

You can also search for the Allen Brickhaus method, which is polycrylic water-based urethane or Zpoxy finishing epoxy brushed on and then wiped off to seal the grain, water-based wall spackle, then Rustoleum primer and colors (not sure if Rustoleum spray paints are available in your area, though).

There's many more on here much more knowledgeable about finishing than I, and I very much give the floor to them.

Steve

As far as covering materials go, Polyspan appears to be the first choice.  If you decide to use it, make sure you get the "real thing."  I remember it under the Starline brand name.  I am not sure if that company is still in business.

I have seen some inferior products that were called Polyspan.  These were terrible.  The weave was very inconsistent with some rather large voids and thin areas that would be impossible to fill with dope or anything else.

Some years ago, there was a product called Thermalspan.  It is very similar to Polyspan except that it has no grain.  It is as strong in the chordwise direction as spanwise.  The weave looks "fuller", if you know what I mean by that.  So, it might take less dope to fill.  I doubt that this product is being produced anymore since very few do any real building these days.  So, no market for it.  However, you might run into it somewhere.

The only use I have for silkspan is to cover bare wood.  I will not use it over any open structure as it has very little puncture resistance.

Check out the SLC  over Polyspan thread. No dope needed, toukg as nails, instant shine. Inexpensive, durable.

Many thanks for the suggestions, but is SLC and Ducolam the same matherial?
I'm evacuating to use bemberg it weight 2oz sq meter but is punture resistent and his application is very easy with dope.

You can also use silk and apply it with CA glue.

Choice of covering/finishing can drive one crazy. One option if the bare frame ship is heavy because of today's wood you can save a considerable amount by using film covering. Typical dope on full size 46 ship about 9oz dope, 4oz film. Just something to consider.
