The small cans (8 or 12 oz) of various colors don't seem to be around any more, at least not in my area.
In my experience, it's fuel proof, and has good coverage and toughness. ???

I looked there. They only carry black, white, red, and yellow. It's rustoleum, not really poly paint. The two part epoxies might be better anyway, and can be mail ordered. Guess I could bite the bullet and spend several hundred to go electric, then I could use tempera paints, but right now I'd rather just quit than do that.

I've had good results shooting Minwax clear polyeurathane over just about anything with no adhesion or compatibility problems. I've even used water based craft paint for trim areas and shot clear poly over it. I would suggest finding a color you want in whatever brand available. Let it dry for a week or two and shoot clear poly over it to fuel proof. The only concern is that it will yellow over a white base color. Any other color will not show the yellowing. Try a few test panels and I think you'll find what you want. Lot's of options before going electric.

Didn't know about it. Thanks. I am trying first to avoid mail ordering paint products, but may have to do that as a last resort.

Any automotive parts stores that mix paints can get you 8 oz. cans of polyurethane in a bazillion colors. Might be a bit spendy, though. Ask for "Single Stage Polyurethane". I have some pints and quarts......

Just a comment: there are one part polyurethanes (not catalyzed) & two part polyurethanes (catalyzed). To get truly fuel-proof (not just fuel-resistant) paint you have to use the catalyzed polyurethanes. One part paints are just not fuel-proof on a long-term basis.
You can get most automotive paint supply stores to mix a pint of most any color you want, and then buy the catalyst & thinner also. You do need to use the proper respirator for protection, but you will have the best appearing and longest lasting finish. To get the highest gloss & to bury the paint masking lines you can spray a couple of coats of clear two-part polyurethane on top of the color.
Also, there is a truly fuel-proof epoxy system available in the small quantities that you need. I can't think of the name of it at the moment but Brett Buck uses it with great results. I just remembered the name of the epoxy: KlassCoat (sp?). It looks great, high gloss, available in many colors, and is pretty easy to use, and is fuel-proof, not just fuel-resistant. It is also available in small quantities.

Just to amplify what Bill Little wrote above, "Single Stage Polyurethane" is contrasted with Two Stage Polyurethane finishes. Two stage means that you apply the color as a basecoat which has all of the color, dries very quickly, is thinned only and not catalyzed, and has virtually no chemical or handling resistance. You can then tape off your color scheme within about 15 minutes and proceed to apply the next color, and so on until you have all of your colors applied. Then it is necessary to apply a couple of coats of two-part catalyzed polyurethane clear to provide the chemical and handling resistance that the basecoat color does not have.
"Single Stage Polyurethane" is a two-part, catalyzed & reduced paint that contains the pigmentation and does not require a clear coat unless you just want to add depth & gloss.
