I have been trying to find out the best ink to use for panel lines. I searched here and on the interweb. I am not lazy, I just looked through all 33 pages in this Paint and Finishing section. No luck.
The Rapidograph inks I have found for film are India Ink, Ultradraw, Rapidraw, Universal, and a few others.
I am interested in Black and White colors. It will be applied to a doped surface and top coated with clear dope.
I will be using it in Rapidograph pens that I still have from the days of yore.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

At least it used to be the Rotring ink for Mylar drafting film. For the refillable ones (Isograph in here)there was a gold sticker in the ink bottle, and for non-refillable ones (Radiograph in here) the rear end of ink reservoir was painted with gold paint.
But they are not available anymore, I'd also like to hear what's a good replacement. L

I’ve experimented with the following for panel lines on RC, FF and CL models (and a lot more different types of pens).
The refillable Isograph allows you to mix the black/white to get a kind of silvery grey.
Needs a clear over the top.

I’m no expert for sure. Some of the Brazilian guys seem to get great results which I was trying to copy. Looks good on transparent film. Would be good ito hear hiw they do it 😀
Indirectly related, but after trying a bunch of different pens, this is one of the best and cheapest I found for panel lines. At least for my taste anyway. Again, needs a clear. See pics below.

Mike, nice pictures and that is a fancy pop bottle.
I sorted through an old Windy video, and he said Rapidograph for ACETATE worked the best.
Is that what folks use?

I guess he means the same as Mylar film. But where to find it?

I believe they are essentially the same thing. One uses pre-filled cartridges and the other you fill yourself.
I have a Rapidograph (for fine lines) and the Isograph in the link above (for slightly wider lines).

Essentially they draw the same but the Isograph gives you greater flexibility on the ink colours you can use but is more of a faff to fill up. You need to use the right inks apparently as using any old ink or whatever can bugger them up 😃

PS might be a transatlantic translation thing but ACETATE in the UK nearly always refers to Acetate sheet. The stuff you make canopies/cockpit windscreens out of.

Yep, since always, there has been 2 different inks: one for paper and another for plastic drawing film. Maybe, when Windy was young, the plastic was some sort of acetate. Today it's mostly polyester (Mylar). The one for plastic film is what you want.
I have used the paper ink in emergency, it flows nicely when you add a minuscule amount of Fairy liquid. But also, as the soap kills the surface tension, it flows too nicely in the capillary channels and messes up the pen and your fingers sooner or later. The paper ink is also very very fragile before you shoot some clear over it. L

I use Higgins pigmented drawing ink, 44021. I got it from Amazon. It’s not waterproof, so you can wipe off anomalies.

i have tried rotring, imported radiograph ( a ton of money for nothing) and ended up back to the inexpensive ordinary india ink ( black and whie) that´s the one that flows better and covers perfectly drying fast. hint: a dip of windex on the mix makes the paint flow easy

I don't -anymore. Many years ago I fed my family as a draftsman and used Rapidographs every day. That translated to models too of course. I'm not sure that company still exists any longer and the supplies would have to be very hard to get since it is an OLD art form. I still have ONE Rapidograph left but don't use it anymore. It is far too much hassle to clean and use. Now I use fine line markers from Walmart. These come in sets of varied width just like a Rapidograph set and do the very same job but without the mess. You don't fill or clean anything-just pull the cap off and draw. The finished job looks exactly like Rapidograph. Mistakes can be wiped away with an alcohol dipped tissue or swab. It is also a little less likely to smear when handling. Once done I lightly spray clear dope over the lines to lock them down then proceed with the finish coats. Easy, cheap and no ink under the fingernails for a week. You will also find these (maybe more variety) at Hobby Lobby.

The best ink for doing panel lines is Koor-I-Noor 3080-F.

After asking here and searching online, that is the exact conclusion I came to and ordered 3080-F.
