I went to the team trials so I lost a few days sanding. Not a lot to see except I made the decal (logo) for this plane. Yes Igor bigger teeth LL~.

All the clear and wood work done it should go to color this week.

Pit viper.

Robert, what do you use for spot putty/ding filler? Thanks...
-
I like the Viper decal, Robert. Very cool. Looks to be coming along.

I am not finishing with DC 540 this plane. So for spot I used Brodak white prime and a brush in bad spots only. The rest is clear dope only. I'm looking for a 8 ounce finish

Robert,
At this particular stage of construction, are your control surfaces permanently in place?

They are the last thing to be installed.

It went to white today. Two coats and I put it al back together and it weighs 52.8 So I am thinking with trim and clear 55-56 ounces. I made my goal if I don't get crazy.
-
NICE ! You do good work Robert ! :)

Sparky,I meant to ask when I saw you the other day.Is the covering on the wing the same stuff you have in the Hobby Shop?Thanx,Trax

yes

As seen here 53.5 oz. I am thinking with trim and clear 55-56 total. This weight plane can be done but it ain't easy.

Can't wait to see the colors on it...

Hi Sparky,
Coming along really nicely! Put a snappy trim scheme on it and burn a lot of electrons!

Looking real good, Bob.
I saw this plane in Muncie at the Team Trials. Bob brought it along for us all to peruse. It is just flawless. But, that is typical for Mr. Storick.

Very high praise indeed, from someone who knows a thing or two about "flawless" , ie Mr. Hunt ! ;)

Thanks for the praise Bob but I would not go as far as flawless. I keep striving for perfect but just can't make it. Such as life. I did spend 2 months on this one so it should be twice as good as my last.

Progress is slow on paint

53.5 ounces as seen here.

Looks nice, Robert. Very clean. Shoot clear and call it good.

Thanks but I can't do that too plain.

I hid the access hatch in the paint scheme.

Red, White, and Blue......hmmmmm where have it seen that before?
Looks nice Sparko!

On everyone of your planes I am guessing. I just wanted to show how I hid the hatch. The paint job blends it right in. Instead of trying to hide it I used it as the paint job.

Robert,
Improved "Viper" graphic. Kudos!
What primer did you choose to use?
Shaping up!
Charles

Clear dope

LUV your decal Robert! #^ #^

Clear dope
OK.
Why is the clear opaque? And white I must add.
Charles
-
He hasn't shot clear yet.
-
Charles;
Scroll back up to Sparky's 'reply #5'. He addresses that he used spot filler only, and nothing but clear dope as a base layer. Later in the thread he shot the white base coat, and then the red / blue, getting the model to where it is now...

Dave,
Thanks, I get it. Nothing wrong with that, cleaver actually.

Nice way to "hide" the hatch parting line!

This is one outstanding looking ship. Can't wait to see clear on it.

Lookin' really good Sparky, the scheme fits the airplane very well. y1
A little red on the wing now and then duplicate the schemes on all of the tail feathers and you're there!
...and BTW, no yellow! n1 ;D
-
Thanks Wayne but that's the plan. Here it is a little farther.

Painted very similar to viper 8 only white
(http://stunthanger.com/smf/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=11599.0;attach=38072;image)

8 looks great but I think I do like this one better in white. I like the wider red stripe behind the blue on the wing on this one too.
I was just thinking as I scrolled down here, you might want to reconsider using the new Viper logo as it's shown above. It's a really cool design but the colors aren't going to go well with the red white and blue plane. I really think you should add the red and blue graphics on the tail surfaces too, it just completes and balances the overall look.
I'm meaning no offense at all here Sparky, V9 looks great so far, just offering a little constructive criticism. H^^
-
Robert
Really nice! The colors blend with the model style!
That is a "mean" Viper!
Looking forward to seeing the finished model!!!

Looks very nice, Robert. Clean. Hope it flies very well for you.
-
Me too thanks.
Here are some shots today. All that's left is ink and clear. I will add some things like USA and Viper in places. Tomorrow I have to go to the sign shop for some stencils.

As seen in this picture The battery is far forward but I do have some other battery holders to move it back after flying it. You will also notice mucho motor offset, I will not get caught up on the zero motor offset again. The wing has 1.5 inches asymmetry. No dumdum added.
-
But keep the decal on the rudder. That looks sweet.

Again, I'm seriously meaning no offense here Sparky, I'm just trying to offer some advice viewing it out here from the "peanut gallery"...
I'm sticking with my original opinion, the Viper logo is cool but the green and yellow colors just don't match anything on the plane. Overall it ends up looking like an otherwise classy, very well executed red white and blue scheme, but then with a 25 cent gumball machine sticker stuck on the tail. Just hate to see anyone "cheapen up" an otherwise great looking model.
Maybe if the Viper logo colors could somehow be adapted to shades of red and blue along with the white? Something like a lighter blue where it's green and then grey where it's yellow, leaving the lettering in red?
Or, you could leave the logo as it is, but change the blue on the plane to lime green. (I know that's not going to happen, just thinking out loud...) ;D
-
Well, I like it.

Long before any opinions I was going to do something different. So its a wait and see thing. Just like the pilot in my S6B I'm not doing it.

No problem Sparky, just tossing it out there.
Anyway, as soon as you finish this one I'm sure we'll probably start the whole process over in about 30 days. ;D
-
its already started
-
Man, Sparky, you are a building machine!
-
I love everything about this new airplane. Very nice lines and a well executed paint scheme, perfect. I will be interested to hear how it compares to your Crossfire in the air.
I went back to your other thread and tried to capture your finishing process. Please correct me, I have a feeling I'm leaving something out. Two coats of clear on entire bare airframe. Cover everything in Polyspan. Two more coats of clear. Sanding in between each clear coat? Spot fill problem areas somewhere during that process. Then two coats of white base coat. Sanded? Then color trim. Then clear? That sounds oversimplified. Did I leave something out?
How much time do you estimate that this process saved you over the way you did your other finishes?
-
Any chance you could take the time to go "under the hood" and show us some of the details on how you fit everything together? I'm very curious to see how you mounted everything. I don't see an arming plug or a timer start button, did you hide them somewhere? How is the timer and ESC mounted? Can you access your timer without too much difficulty to make programming changes? Could you show us a photo of your battery tray and how it is actually fit and mounted into the fuselage? It looks so nicely organized and orderly.
Thanks
-
You are correct on the finish and it saved around 4 ounces. Now this won't be a 36 inch finish but should glean 18 or 19 points in a NATS setting. Here it is all paint shot, I left off the decal just because I want to fly it this week. I will start inking tonight and clear tomorrow. By Friday or Saturday I should be able to test fly it. I can always work on it some more if needed but I don't think I will need to. To do a finish such as this requires a lot of sanding. As seen here 53.5 with tip weight and arming plug. I am allowing 2 ounces for clear and that's it. The rest will be done rubbing.

As seen here take the battery out and the timer is bolted over the switch. The switch is accessable in front of the landing gear in the air opening hidden from view. The ESC is rubber banded to a fixture which in turn is bolted to the fuse floor.
Arming plug sticks out the bottom in a recessed spot. Everything is hidden from view. I was tired of looking at unsightly switches knobs and protrusions sticking from the fuse. I hate the Velcro method of mounting the battery.
The battery is held in a holder that bolted to a cross member behind the motor. Centered in that is a magnet to hold the cowl on.
Last photo shows how I can change battery location after trimming. Up down backwards or forwards. Plenty of room. I am hoping to move the battery as far back as possible. That means I have the weight of a FOX.35 in the nose and not a brick. Should aid in a sharp turn. The need to fly nose heavy is reduced by engineered parameters such as motor offset and asymmetry. Guess I should have done a spread sheet and some formula to figure this out but I am a hard case. LL~
-
Looks very good, Robert. I hope if flies very well for you. Should look slick from the judges view.
-
Well I tried new things and it didn't work. I went to the art store for some ink for film for my Repidograph pens. No luck. I know some use Staedtler pens but no luck there. So the kid said try Micron liner pens. Don't waste your time or money. I tried them and they don't dry. So I ordered some ink and I will have it Friday and I can finish inking then. Saturday is clear day.
-
Looks great Sparky, the ink detail will finish it off perfectly. y1
-
This is how the arming plug and switch are hidden.

Sparky,The start button hidden in the air outlet is sweet. It takes one more wart off the side.
-
Thank you for taking the time to disassemble your project ship and show us some of the under hood details. Lots of great ideas that I would like to incorporate into my next airplane. Love the fact that all the stuff is hidden from sight.
-
Here it is inked. I went to the blueprint supply house and got what I needed. The lines are dusted with clear to seal them but its too humid to clear today. I am going to fly it this weekend no matter what.

Looks really good Sparky. y1
Just curious, why no ink on the fuselage?
-
I shot clear today and humidity was high and it did blush a little. I have been sanding with 1000 grit getting ready for the second and final coat. 54.25 now and it stops at 55.5 max. I will be flying this this weekend.
-
Wonderful plane! Congrats!
-
Looks sweet!

Do you sell plans for any of the Viper series ?
-
Dead weight? LL~
You are almost right. There are no plans for this plane I build out of my head. Maybe someday I will draw some.
