Ultracote question (transparency)
« on: April 04, 2013, 08:55:23 PM »
I recently re-covered my son's Cardinal, and had issues from pigment stains left from the old covering. I needed something that would cover and could not be seen through. My son bought 2 rolls of Ultracote, yellow and orange. Both these colors were quite opaque, didn't hide at all. I then discovered cream colored Ultracote covered the stains quite well, as did red. It seems that the only technical support I could find on Ultracote comes from Horizon Hobbies. I sent a support request to them asking for a listing of which Ultracote colors are opaque, and which are solid, and explained the above to them as clearly as I did here. After several days I got a reply back, they said they didn't know, but the darker colors usually hide better then lighter ones. Now doesn't it seem like CREAM is a lighter color then ORANGE or YELLOW? Seems to blow that theory right out the window. I feel bad for my son who basically wasted about 35 bucks buying a product he can't use, and can not get reliable information from the manufacturer's apparent sole representative. Does anyone know who might have this information? I think it's very poor business to not list this type of information in product descriptions in ordering sites.  I would greatly appreciate any info you folks might have.

Steve,
None of the yellow or orange iron-on coverings I have used are totally opaque....and for that matter neither are many of the paints.  I will never forget the first model I finished with yellow dope. After many coats of color, you could still see wood grain through the paint.  I later learned that it is the nature of the color and why colors like yellow and white require a white primer undercoat.  I'm not certain what the "stains" on the wood are from.  If the covering that was on the plane previously was something like monokote, which has the pigment in the adhesive, the stains can be reduced by wiping the wood with a paper towel soaked in a product called "Ironex" (available at most hobby shops).  Once you have removed the stains, then recover with a color other than yellow, white or orange.

As for the information from Horizon Hobbies.....if you want good advice on issues such as this, find an old fashioned hobby shop in your town that has clerks who are experienced modelers.  Or post on this forum.  Usually you can find someone that can help.

Good luck with the Cardinal.  I have had one since the kit first first came out.  It is a good stunt trainer with minor modifications.

Jerry
