Question on adding color....
« on: August 23, 2015, 02:47:25 PM »
I'm wondering if anybody has tried adding colored powder to clear urethane ?
And what kind of colored powder you used ?
I was thinking of maybe making colored cornstarch but not sure on how well it would work ???

Hi Jim,

I'm not sure why you want to add colored powder to clear (2-part, I assume) polyurethane with the thousands of colors that are available...???  The primary effect of adding cornstarch to the clear will be to flatten the gloss and decrease the intercoat adhesion.  If you are just doing this for the heck of it then go for it, otherwise you are becoming an experimental chemist.

That is a primary component of store-bought pies.  I don't think much of it.

OK, here is my though and what I am trying to achieve...
Personally I am not looking for a great finish like you guy who fly competetive stunt make on their airplanes....
I am looking for a simple way to achieve a look that while being painted is clean and easy to do...
Possible even a wash kind of look to it..
Just not sure how to add color to a clear coating like urethane ...

Jim,
I just googled "urethane paint pigments" and came up with several choices.  I know "Smooth On" has some available.  They are the company that makes lots of pourable silicone rubber compounds for making molds.
