Replacement for Micafilm and Coverlite
« on: May 11, 2023, 03:23:08 PM »
Guys,
Is there any replacements out there for Micafilm or Coverlite? I am looking for something that can go on without the need for additional paint. With the balsa we have I need to save weight and although Ultracote or MonoKote are an option they loosens in the sun (or at least my experience with MonoKote). What else do we have?

Best,   DennisT

How about dyed silkspan topped with clear SLC covering?

Bill,
That could work how do you attach the SLC to the silkspan?

There have been extensive threads on this process. Try the search function. Larry Renger started the idea I think, Doc Holliday jumped on the band wagon. After 20 years on the internet, it's all here some where. there are no new problems!

You can attach the silkspan with dope, or iron it on using Mod Podge craft glue. Either way, you will just adhere the perimeter. The SLC is an iron on with heat activated adhesive, but thinner and lighter than Monokote. There is a big thread about SLC over Polyspan, but it will work with silkspan also.

Film over fiber is light weihght and really a tough composite like Micafilm. Look through the SLC over Polyspan thread. 56000+ hits, 200+ replies. I have used the technique for years with great results.

Check it out, then try it.

So do you adhere the silkspan to the frame, wet and let is shrink tight then just iron on the SLC or do you need to put a couple coats of dope on the silkspan then after that gases off iron on the SLC?

I like the idea cause you can easily dye the silkspan then use the SLC to seal/fuel proof it. But I think you need to have the silkspan tight and smooth.

Do not dope the silkspan! Only bond the edges to the structure.
