Which one to use on polyspan open bays?
-
Opinions vary but I use one coat of tautening butyrate on the open bays only. Every thing else is non-tautening from bare wood up---No nitrate--- including application of the Polyspan. My results are snare drum tight. Ask anyone who has seen them.

HI Danny,
Yes it is tautening. Maybe not as much as Sig Super Coat clear, but much more than Sig Lite Coat clear.

As a continuation of the discussion, Brodak clear is indeed taughtening, however I've never used it. Crystal clear is non-taughtening. There is a small amount of color in plain clear. All Randolph dope has color in their taughtening and non-taughtening clear unless the label says it is clear. The web site can verify this.
I've never used taughtening dope and have never had a problem with covering or painting anything other then using way too much dope.
Both Brodak and Randolph have instructions and Randolph has a book, or at least Aircraft Technical Support in Columbus, Oh, also a distributor of Randolph products has one both of which together have everything one would want to know about the products.
Hope this helps.

Good info...
I ordered from Wicks 1 qt of clear, and 1 qt of thinner this past Monday, it showed up Tuesday with there standard FedEx 3 day shipping. WOW.
PS - Good luck this year Robert at Brodaks this year. I will not make it up.

Brodak-- my batch, anyhow-- isn't taughtening enough for silk.
-
On silk, the Esaki type, I use a 60% thinner first coat of tautening dope, and maybe another coat or two, depending on how I feel. (I use more dope and less thinner with each successive coat.) Then I switch to non tautening to take the finish up to smooth and shiny with no pinholes.
