Final cleanup question before spraying color
« on: June 07, 2016, 03:04:10 PM »
I have a Twister that's been a slow build so far and I'm finally ready to shoot the color on it. The wing is Monokoted, but the fuse is covered with light fiberglass and dope. The flaps, stab and elevator are covered with silkspan and the fillets are made with Microballoons. All of it has been primed with NAPA DC-540 and sanded. But it's been sitting in the dusty shop for so long, and I've had my hands all over it. Whenever I see a blem that needs a quick hit with sandpaper, I usually follow up with a tack cloth, and I bet that leaves a residue that should be cleaned too. So before I do the last cleaning before the first coat of paint, what is the best way to clean it spic and span and get it ready for a perfect coat of DC acrylic lacquer? Alcohol would be my choice unless y'all give me a better idea.
Thanks,
Rusty

Well quite a few people subscribe to using Windex, ( the old formula, not the new smell pretty ones) I believe windex would work.
also a thin mix of Dish-soap and water rinsed very well after works
I would not use alchohol on a dope surface personally,,, I would consider a wax and grease remover as used by auto paint shops,,
Whatever you use the objective is to float the contaminants off the surface and then wipe them off an edge while they are suspended in the fluid.
repeat several times
For years the rat race had me going around in circles, Now I do it for fun!

Good idea, there's a bottle of blue ammonia Windex sitting right next to it. It also has detergent in it. I used to never care too much, but this is a really nice plane I've built, so I turned up my expectations a bit. Thanks, Mark.

I agree with Mark. I always use Windex and gently wipe it off with a lint free shop towel. At this step I also wear Latex gloves and never touch the plane with bare hands until I'm completely finished shooting the last coat. Nice looking plane Rusty.

Thanks Paul. The kit was given to me along with the jig sets that I made the movies about, so I wanted to honor the generosity with a high quality build. Hopefully this will be the flagship of my Intermediate fleet and will help me fly into Advanced. I finally won one, but would feel better if I'd had to outscore more than one guy. I'm not flying Advanced patterns yet. Shapes are good, but pullouts and bottoms are holding me back. My fuel and  engine management are Advanced. I've never tried very hard, so this Summer, that changes.
