Title: Spray Paint
Post by: Mike Griffin on July 08, 2022, 11:51:43 AM
What brands of spray paint (ie Rustoluem,  Krylon, etc,) have been found to go over nitrate or butyrate dope without an adverse reaction?  I tried Rustoleum over dope once and got a really bad orange peel effect.

Thank you
Mike,.

Hi Mike, I am a huge Krylon fan as long as I intend to cover it with a clear fuel proofer.  Their color selections are really neat.

Mike,
I have used Rustoleum over dope with no problems. Most important thing was to apply thin coats. When I have had problems it was applied to thick and it knuckled. Best thing to do is sand the surface with 400 and wipe it down with degreaser, then spray light coats, watch the time between coats.

Best,   DennisT

Thank you Will.  I like the Krylon colors as well.  Just wanted to make sure you could spray it over Nitrate or Butyrate.

I recently used nitrate with silkspan. Then used Rust-Oleum sandable auto primer. This is the best primer I've used. Then used Rust-Oleum color. Only about four flights so far but zero ill effects. My next model will likely use the Rust-Oleum auto primer and then go back to butyrate because I've got all the cool colors already.

Beware, the sandable rattle can primers I have used do a great job of filling the last bits of grain, but are VERY heavy. I sand most of it off

I have used nothing but Nason 2K for the past ten years or so.  Yes, it can be heavy if you get carried away, but with careful application and good sanding and buffing it is incredible.  (I also use it for the finishes on my custom guitars and basses.)

Dwayne,
Is the Tremclad rust paint fuel proof? Did you clear over it - what kind of clear?
