Title: Sig Thinner with Brodak Dope
Post by: Bill Barber on March 08, 2015, 08:13:11 PM
Would I be making a mistake to thin Brodak dope with Sig thinner ?
I am talking about butyrate dope .
  Thanks , Bill

Only one way to find out.  Pour a bit of Brodak dope into a container and add the Sig thinner.  If they are not compatible, I would expect a fairly quick indication of it.

If it looks OK, brush it on a scrap piece.  I heard that Randolph makes both Sig and Brodak dope.  I have both but have never mixed the two, never applied one over the other.  They do not smell the same but that may not matter.  I have also heard that some have used Sig clear over Brodak colors for the final clear coat.  The claim here is that the Sig clear is a bit more fuel resistant but I have not made any tests to prove that.

Even though I have been told it was a mistake, I have thinned Brodak dope with SIG thinner, both butyrate.  Right now I am using an automotive paint reducer to  thin my dope.   Seems to be working so far.  Just don't mix with nitrate.

You pay our money and take your chances. Of course, ideally, you use the designated thinner (Sig with Sig, Brodak with Brodak, etc) but I've used other stuff. Big thing is don't change in mid-stream. If you start off using Sig Thinner with Brodak dope, do it throughout the finish. Changing in mid-finish will likely create adhesion problems. Somethings you can get away with it but it becomes a "if you hold your head just right and stand on one foot it will work" sort of thing.
