Thank you Charles

Work has been killing me, but it's never say die, right?
Today I'm going to have some free time and try to advance a little more both ships.

Marcus,

What about that combat model you were excited about? Have you put that asside or did you finish it?

It's OK. It needs a little work to be 100%, but it flies great!!
I've got to decrease de venturi dia. 'cause it's slurping fuel and I can't get enough flight time.

The engine cowl... tried to make it the most cooling-efficient I could, not letting the hot air into he tank compartment.
Still have to add the nuts and bolts for fixation.
A few more details and it's gonna be ready for dope and sanding.
i can feel my arms hurt already... LL~ LL~

Try to make the venturi  a little longer. On some engines, the velocity of the incoming air bounces off when  the crankshaft closes and lets fuel and air "backdraft". If you elongate the path, the momentum doesn't come back, it actually pressurizes the inlet at the crank when it opens again. Don't do smaller dia.!!!

Guys

Thanks a lot.
With so many set backs that life, work, family, dogs, etc, make us go thru, building a nice ship, whatever it is, requires a lot of hard work and pacience.
I take a look at it and yhink "Spray the clear and go fly..."
But I, for once in my building career, would like to finish a model properly.
I'm going to have some  free time today, so will try to advance whatever it is that is missing, so I can shoot the first coat of dope....
Having your support, and I mean everybody who check this thread, is really motivating.
Colors will be white, blue and red, to match the "Magnum" sticker that came with the kit.
Just don't know how they will go.
maybe I should bother Marlus a little...
He owes me... Don't you Marlus??? LL~ LL~ LL~

Wayne, Charles has asked the same question.
No special reason, just thought about doing it differently to see how it'd look.
So, got any ideas for yours?
Are you going to scratchbuild or is it a kit?
I think this ship has elegant lines. I might still have the FM with the report of the releasing of the kit by Sig.
They could offer iy again, don't you think?

Borrowed my friend's incidence meter and decided to check the Magnum...
The first pic the screen kept switching 00.0 / 00.1... One has got to have a "light hand" to zero it properly LL~ LL~
Checked wrap too, nothing to report, as the difference was 00.1 from one wing to another. Guess that's OK
One note is that the meter is set for my friend's use, so he does it with the model upside down, therefore when you see the negative, it's actually positive n~

Not bad for some old-school eyeballing barnyard engineering.... D>K H^^

I've taken a break until I get my super fil for the fillets, thought I might improve the way I've been doing it and all the pros are for it...
I'll be doing some sanding meanwhile...

I've done some serious sanding, and am ready to put on the dope coats.
I'll follow Robert's lead until primer is on.
About the colors, my friend Marlus has convinced me to go like the pic on the box, and he will be helping me out with painting/clear..
I didn't take pics 'cause it's only sanding, but it's getting very good.

If you have good eyesight your eye balling of parts with pratice is incredibly close. I can see a few thousands if I look and study. The finish is ALL in the sanding. Good eyes help here as well. Use the light method.

If you use a women's emery board on these areas to make them flat and round. Next thing is on your next airplane the wing tip weight box access door goes on the bottom. I am not criticizing what so ever. I was studying your plane and I hope its a optical illusion but which wing is longer? Inboard or outboard?

Use the nail file in the flat and long postion. file one way around the edge and then the other. In a X pattern.

Hey, Marcus, it's looking real good!  The Magnum is always a good flying model.  Don't go too far overboard on the finish, don't let the weight get too high.

I am repairing our Magnum and hope to have it flyable by the time I can fly again.  I originally powered it with a Tower .46, then a ST G.51.  Might use a Randy Smith set up OS .45FSR this time.

Good Luck!

Thanks Bill and Robert

I'm really willing to have a great finish non this ship.

Robert, according to the plans, both panels are the same, there's no shorter panel.
i've done some sanding on the áreas you pointed out and they look much better now, and the more I sand, the better it gets.
Now, need to buy some 320 grit sand paper and dope is on... Then, guess what, more sanding...
But FWIW, I had this friend who used to own a paint shop, and he was specialized in hi-end models, like mercedes benz and bmw's?
He Always said exactly what Robert says, finishing is sanding, the paint will only show what's underneath with colors...

Robert, I'm not really sure of the emery board you're talking about. Could you post a pic, so I can be sure?

Thanks again people

Ok, some pics...

Guys, don't be shy...

Just for fun, measured the wings and everything again, who am I to question Robert's eyeballing?? LL~
Wow, everything is fine...
I wish you guys could feel the wood, so smooth...
Let's continue with the one step at a time for it's been working great.
Oh, a question, should I do the superfil fillets before doping?? If so, will have to wait until I get it...

Robert is precisly correct, as is your friend,, However, just like practicing flying,, simply sanding (or practicing flying) does not insure success,, more QUALITY sanding ( or flying) makes the difference,,
so sand with a plan,, direction and discernement,, not willy - nilly,,

Mark,

Do willy and nilly always hang out together? Does nilly sometimes go it alone?
actually, Willy and Nilly are interrelated,( please note proper capitalization of the names,, these omissions tend to make Nilly rather upset,, Willy could care less, just give him beer and a lawn chair and he is good), much as Jekyll and Hyde,,

and they have no affiliation with Helter Skelter whatsoever, and will vehemetly deny any such connection or comparisons,,

actually, Willy and Nilly are interrelated,( please note proper capitalization of the names,, these omissions tend to make Nilly rather upset,, Willy could care less, just give him beer and a lawn chair and he is good), much as Jekyll and Hyde,,

and they have no affiliation with Helter Skelter whatsoever, and will vehemetly deny any such connection or comparisons,,

I always thought Willy and Nilly were related to Heckle and Jekyll?

But not Helter-Skelter.  Possibly a cousin of Flim-Flam.

This is starting to be like the Barton Flying Club site.  They pick on each other also over there.

First coat of dope is on...

Marcus

 Marcus,

You said above for us to not be shy so I'm going to mention, you're not done sanding yet. n1

You still have more shaping to do in the areas that Sparky points out with his red arrows above. One example is to compare your rounded edges all around your fin and rudder to the squared and still unshaped ends of the stab and elevator. Looking things over, there are many areas where you can still do more rounding and finish sanding. Shaping details like this should be balanced throughout the entire model. These are the types of details that add just a little more time to a build, but it's spending that time that with the details that can make all the difference in the finished product. As inspiration, I sometimes try to think of it as every stroke of the sandpaper takes off that much more weight too.

I mean no offense with my comments Marcus, just trying to help you progress... H^^

Wayne

Thanks for your words, and I agree with all of them.
The stab/elev tips are getting rounded for sure.
I'll post pics later.
Good advice is always welcomed... Like, for a first time I'll not pin the hinges.
Marlus is helping me with the painting and clear and he said we should paint everything apart and then glue the hinges, and as everybody here goes like that So will I.
I'll try my best to have a good looking model and learn all I can in the process.
Two things...
I'd still like a pic of that emery board, for I'm not really sure if I know what it is and who the heck is Flim Flam???

So the Superfil has arrived! Congrats to Brodak for making it come so fast.
Have read the label and run a search here, anyway any tips I could use to get it nice?
I think making a template tool helps a lot, like the radius is smooth and even from the pics I've seen...
Let's see what I get.

Marcus,

Just don't worry too much about mistakes. The stuff sands pretty easy and has a very long work time. As much as a couple of hours depending on temperature.

Hey Marcus!

I thought you used Epoxy and micro-balloons?

I coppied your moves on that.

Now I gotta copy these moves?   LL~

Hey! Let me know which one you like the best. Probably superfil, it's gotta be lighter? Right?

Thanks Randy.
Well, most of the top builders use it and recommend it too, so why not?
The epoxi+microballoons works ok, but why not try something different?
It just seems better, and I'll know for sure...
Until the end of the week I shall do the new fillets , then a couple of pics with the wing tips and stab/elev tips sanded to shape.
Gonna buy sandpaper tomorrow... I'm out HB~>

CAN (and will) someone please send Marcus a pack of emery boards??

Flim-Flam is the 'gremlin' that takes advantage of people's greed and turns it on them. Actor George C. Scott played "the Flim Flam Man" in a 'flim film'. (Whew!)
