Derek thanks a lot!!
Ty, what you see is the adjustable rudder loose, not conected to the horn, that's why you see it with all that angle...

Now, I've put on 3 coats of raw dope, sanding each one, only the third was sanded with 600 and the plane seems sealed and ready for primer.
I ain't covering the balsa, so you guys think I should go with some more dope before primer?
I really don't want to screw up with this finishing...

Hi Marcus,

I would rather see you apply light silkspan to the entire structure before applying primer, etc......

By the way, where have you guys been ordering silkspan?
The local shop says it's not available...

Thanks guys

So, I'll be ordering the .2 carbon tissue from acp composites, and meanwhile, more dope and sanding.
Never worked with carbon tissue... It's gonna be fun.
3 yards should do the whole model, so I will order 4...

Ok.
I've got some 3 yards of CV.
And some silkspan too.
What would be better? I know I cannot cover the whole model with the CV I got, so, where should I cover with CV and where with silkspan? I figure the flaps should have the CV....
Any advice?

Thanks

You can cover the entire plane with CV. I did everything except my wing which is an open bay wing.

Marcus, you're going to love your Magnum and the way it flies!  I had one in the early 90's that was an overweight pig but flew fantastically. (72 oz.!)  I had Merco 60 in it and loved the airplane.  Why am I saying this?  Because I want you to really enjoy this ship and to encourage you.  You are doing a great job there, keep up the good work!

I've run a search here and found some nice tips.
It was said to dab the veil, so it won't "dissolve"... Doc said not to back stroke...
And should I go for the edges first, like silkspan? I tdoesn't seem so, there's no shrinking.
Will do the elevators first to have a taste, then move on to the rest of the ship.
Also, is there a right side to be laid down?? It was said the shiny side goes up...
Remember guys, firt time doing this, wanna do it right.

Thanks

The package I had did have a shiny side and a dull side.   I only used the one package and said never again.  But, like other materials it takes practice and patience.  Oh, the shiny side is up.

There were a few spots I thought I could work on and sanded some more.
I was going to put some CV on but I had a little problem with the lights in the room and can only get it back tomorrow.
I'll try my best to give this ship a good finish... ;)

Hey! Hey! Marcus,

Your model is looking really good.  H^^

All downhill now.   #^

Will "you" spray the finish?

Or will you mask the model off and make trips to your local auto body shop, for each color, as I once suggested?

Hi Charles

Yes, I'm spraying the colors... But, before I spray the Magnum, I'm gonna do a couple ships, so I can have some practice.
I've sprayed clear already, but colors only using a rattle can.
Then, there's a ARF Nobler I'm rebuilding, which will be ship number 1 for painting, then the ThunderGazer, and only then the Magnum.
Look what I've found... They were in my mother's atttic....
Ink lines, here I come...It's gotta be a full package, right?

Marcus.  If you haven't yet tried carbon veil over balsa, you will like it.  I dope it down in pieces, and you can overlap pieces and it will not show.  CV sticks good and never comes loose around the edges like silkspan.  If you brush it too much it will come apart.  But thinned dope doesn't cause your paintbrush to drag.

So, carbon is on.
Have done only one side of one elevator, but Floyd nailed it on the head... Easier than silkspan and the edges are perfect.
I tapped the brush  gently and it settled down no problem.
Now I'm really excited to get this ship all covered.

How many planes are you working on?    I just finished putting the Poly-span on the Ringmaster Imperial and four coats of dope.   Now ready to rub down the ruff areas.

I am working on the Thundergazer, but it was good to take a little break, and since I had the veil and the dope on the bench, I grabbed the Magnum and advanced that.

Hey, a day on this one and the next day on the other, going back and forth you will soon have them done.   Should have had the Ringmaster Imperial done, but started on the Super Ringmaster as soon as Barry got the plans to me.   Still need a fuel tank on the scratch built S-1 Ringmaster.

Hello Marcus.
Firstly, you are doing a fantastic job. Good to see a Magnum again.

Secondly, can I ask where you got the plans from???
I had one in kit form back in 89 and I would like to build another one. I just can't seem to find any plans.

Regards
Damian.

Damian

I bought a kit, so it came with the plans....
Anyway, if you can't find them anywhere, let me know...
I could try to get you a copy of mine though they don't show the root and tip pattern...
And as we are at it, is there anybody out there who could cut wings for this ship???
I could go for a number 2... You know... Nice ship... 8)

I see. Perhaps there's a small market for magnum plans. I dare say I wouldn't be the only person that would like a copy.
They are a great model. I can't believe nobody has drawn some up. Maybe someone has but they are very hard to find.

Hey Damien , You can get an updated plan from Tom Dixon in collaboration with Randy Smith, I'm sure there are plenty of people prepared to cut wings, If not try Bob Hunt. Go to the classifieds also you might have some luck. Also go to the vendors corner. Noel.

Wow Marcus, that really looks great!

Not sure why, but there is something about the look of the nose and spinner that make me think a WWII British paint job would really go well on this ship.

Thanks for sharing your build!

Great timing that this thread popped up.
I was presented a Magnum in Huntersville as a gracious gesture from the the Norfolk Aeromodelers. And I'm driving to Joe Nall Saturday to give it a flight and bring it to its new home. The thing is, I need to do some tape measuring of my cars to figure out just how I'm going to make that happen.

I believe the wingspan is 60". Can someone tell me how long the fuselage is? I'm hoping with the back seats out or folded down I'll be in business.

Tip of spinner to end of rudder is 47".

I have put the Magnum in a Subaru Outback with the rear seats folded down. It takes up a lot of real estate, but there is still room for a flight box and other stuff. Just don't put anything heavy behind it, in case you have to stand on the brake at some point.

Thanks Mike!
The first time I tried to put it into my compact, I realized I was in trouble...
I am sorry I haven't done more....Stuff keeps happening, and my life now is like a tornado...
I really want to do a good job with the finishing.. Just hope it doesn't get a little too heavy...

Marcus,

I had no idea or forgotten that your model was 60" in span.

You're gonna need a bigger boat!

Thinking color yet?

Hmmm, if either of my cars was built around the Magnum, it would fit inside. I think it'll work. Thanks, Jim

You're absolutely right!  Of course, I did mine as a P-40 Warhawk in 1990.  It really wasn't a huge deal to change it over - just a little tweak here and there and it was done!

Charles

I guess I am going to do it like the prototype, the light blue with the red, White and blue trimming.
Yeah, bigget boat is a possibility, indeed...
Gee, that is going to be a lot of sanding.... LL~ LL~ LL~
