I am finishing Larry Cunningham's last plane he built. It had a coat of color on it (red DuPont Lucite automotive I think) I have a can
that I thought he used, but a different red. There is primer on top of the red in spots where he was fixing a spot. I now need to get
most all of this off and start with a gray base and then color. What should I use?
Had a friend recommend Super Assilex (yellow) to sand off the paint, but it's not available around here and a bit pricey.
Help!

Well, it depends on how far you want to take it down. You can use something like Jasco stripper, but that will lift everything down to the wood. I you just want to take the paint off, you are pretty much stuck with sanding. I've used 220 wet/dry and Dawn in water. takes a bit but it works. Re-prime and off you go.
