Panel Lines over Dope
« on: April 26, 2016, 06:18:56 PM »
Gentlemen,

Sprayed a coat of Brown SIG dope on my current building of a P-39 Bell Airacobra.

How many days should be delayed before putting on the Panel Lines due to the dope Outgassing?

Thanks for your answers.

Are you going to put more dope over the panel lines? Fuel proof lines?

You can put down the ink panel lines two hours after the dope is applied.  The gassing is no consequence to anything.  Then you should spray one or two dust coats of clear over the ink to lock it down.  You might let that dry overnight before moving on.  Cure time becomes important after all final coats are on- before flying 3-4 days,  before wet sanding and rub out 3-4 weeks to reach real hardness.

Charles,

Dave,

Thanks for the feedback.

After the Panel Lines are on, will apply a light coat of Clear Klass Kote.

Thanks again.

Dave Gierke ( might not be spelled correctly) published an article in Flying Models years ago (I think it was) on doing ink lines. Keep some baby powder or corn starch handy to rub down the surface if the ink doesn't want to transfer well and skips. Just a light dusting and rub in gently.Keep some rubbing alcohol handy to wipe off mistakes with clean cotton rags or Q-Tips.  When finished, apply the clear as already described. This also works with any kind of paint.
  Type at you later,

I recommend using the Klass Kote polyurethane clear rather than their epoxy clear to avoid the yellowing of the epoxy clear.  Klass Kote is a very high quality product but all epoxy clears will turn yellow.  This has been Brett Buck's recommendation also as he has considerable experience with Klass Kote products.
