Title: Rusleum clogs
Post by: Jim Roselle on August 01, 2013, 10:13:47 AM
I'm a 1/2a sport flier and so far I have finished all of models with Rustoleum. I am having problems with the spray tips getting clogged. Any solutions?

Thank you,
Jim

Make sure that you hold the can upside down and spray until the paint's not feeding.  Then store the can upside-down.

The first clears the paint from the nozzle.  The second is supposed to keep clumps from forming on the bottom of the can where they'll get picked up.

I've never been able to use up a can of spray paint before it clogs, so either it can't be done when you're doing lots of little jobs, or I'm not up on all the tricks.

I do the upside down bit then I pull the nozzle off the can and pop it in some acetone in a baby food jar. I make sure that all the paint is out o the nozzle and run some acetone through it with a syringe. I also wash the spray spigit in the top of the can with acetone. I imagine that paint or lacquer thinner would probably work in place of acetone (I believe that acetone is supposed to be less toxic).

I still sometimes get clogs!  HB~>

Shake it for several minutes a couple hours before you need it, then shake it for several minutes before use, and a few shakes every minute during use.

I rarely get clogs, and run my cans of paint out to spitting empty (I could eek a little more out, but it won't lay right)

The above advice is also good.

If it plugs up unmercifully drop the nozzle in a bowl of thinner for a few minutes.

+1 on the acetone. John beat me to it.
I haven't had many clogs with Rustoleum. I usually use the automotive enamel if they have the color I need. I don't know if it's more resistant to clogging or not, but I shake it between every pass and purge upside down, as suggested above. The problem I have had lately is having it bubble up under the clear Lustrekote, even after two or three weeks of curing. It could just be that I may be too heavy handed with the clear on my last couple of projects.

Will one can of spray paint do a plane that has close to 600 square inches of area including the fuse and tail sections?

Thanks for the info guys! I had a completely clogged nozzle and acetone did the trick in a matter of seconds.

Not if you're as heavy handed as I am.

It helps to have the can warm before spraying.  I put it in a pail of hot water so it's warm but not above the 120 warning on the can.  In the summer you can just set it out in the sun for a bit.

Was spraying some Rustoleum today, and when finished turned can upside down to clear nozzle.  But it did not clear, just kept spraying inverted.  Got to reading can (it has what they call a new comfort nozzle) and it specifically says its designed to spray at any angle including upside down.   To clean nozzle it says to remove and use a solvent.  I used lacquer thinner.

I have very limited use of spray cans.  I was once using one and it kept spitting out clumps of paint.  Not having another can, I sprayed the entire can into a jar.  Then put the paint into my spray gun and used it that way.

That's pretty severe, but all I could do at the time.
