Title: Recommended color sequence
Post by: Jim Treace on January 12, 2010, 03:40:24 PM
I am near completion scratch built profile P 51-D (Pat Johnston plans). I am thinking of using the paint scheme similar to Jim Brooks P 51 "February". Question is what method would you use to paint this scheme. I don't know if red or yellow will paint over silver. Suggestions. I will be using all dope. Cover will be silkspan.
Thanks, Jim

Were it me, I'd paint the silver then the black then the yellow then the red. Be sure you shoot a coat of heavily thinned (maybe 80/20) clear over the silver before proceeded to the trim colors.

Mostly agree with Randy on this,,
though for the sake of any inadvertand contamination that may be in the spray gun, I would tend to do the yellow first, then red, then black. Though other than residue in the gun, on this scheme it wont matter much.

I would also shoot a coat of white under prior to spraying any yellow. Yellow over silver tends to look very Green and not clean looking at all..

Randolph recommends using yellow and red ONLY over white.  It works for me!
Red will generally not cover anything but white.

OK, so as I understand, paint entire plane silver. Then clear set coat over the silver. Then mask off and shoot white...clear set coat, then shoot the colors over the white.  I was concerned that colors wouldn't go over silver very well. Anything else I should look out for?
Thanks for your help, Jim

I always use matt white as a base coat for silver, usually one thin coat of silver is sufficient then!

Not sure that a clear barrier is needed over the white.
It would create a thicker edge to be dealt with, and is of dubious benefit in my opinion, the clear over the silver is a really good idea though for adhesion, and to prevent the tape from marking the metallics in the silver

Good point. The clear over white would not accomplish anything positive.
Thanks to all for the input.

Or you could back mask the whole thing, spray the red, then the yellow, and then that olive drab.  When you're done with that, you mask off those colors and spray the silver.  A very easy way to save time and masking tape, and also easy to do since it is just straight bars.

something to think about H^^

Mark's right. Just a very thinned coat of clear over the silver to lock it down and prevent adhesion problems. Matt's comment is also pretty good. You could shoot on those trim colors pretty easily since they are mostly straight lines then mask those off and shoot the silver last.

All color striping first, silver last. That may be the best way to go. So that I have good clean lines between the red/yellow/black/silver, should I still shoot a clear set coat over the silver before I pull the tape off the covered stripes?

It probably won't matter than much, but just be sure that the substrate is locked down prior to starting color coats. I usually shoot some heavily thinned clear prior to color coats and trim.

I typically try to shoot lighter to darker.  As darker covers lighter without looking so bad. :)
