Title: Re-clear coating an old model
Post by: Clint Ormosen on October 28, 2015, 08:48:02 PM
Since I damaged my Vanloo Chipmunk at the Golden State meet, I'm building a new tail section for it. As I look at the aging model, I see the dope finish is shrinking and could use a fresh cut and polish but there really isn't enough clear on it to do this without getting into the color. I can live with the bottom as is, but I want to shoot a coat or two of clear dope on the top.
So the question is, what can anyone recommend to really clean the surface of oil and dirt to prep it for more dope? I'll probably rough it up with some 1500 so the fresh clear can get some "bite" on the 8 yr old finish.

I've actually been considering the same treatment for my Shark 402. I would think that once you've cleaned the model well enough to do your sanding, and have then finished the sanding, you could give it a couple thorough rub downs with Windex or alcohol and be ready to go. I'm sure a few of the more savvy painters here will have some more elaborate products in mind but IMO I think "Plan A" would work just fine. Let's see what else pops up... D>K

Clint,
What I have done in the past on IC models was just wet sand with 1000 grit using Sikkens M-600 as your lubricant.
Make sure and wear nitrile gloves.  Really cleans and preps the surface.

I second this plan of action,,
one caveat,, I dont like to let the M-600 dry on the surface,, so as you sand an area, wipe it dry with a paper towel,,
