What to do with blushing
« on: May 20, 2012, 08:03:44 PM »
I sprayed some Brodak color today and had some blush issues, I didn't have any retarder on hand.  What can I do to fix it, or will it come out when I shoot the clear?  I remember Windy telling me once about a "cocktail" paint shops would mix for this problem but I don't remember for sure what it was (I think it was 3 parts thinner to 1 part clear but won't swear to it).

Thanks,

James

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

What, no one ever told a joke that made you blush?  Even when you were 14?

Boy, you were made of cast iron as a kid.

One of the genuine paint experts will come on and either tell you that I'm all wet or that I'm spot on, but your question has been asked before, and there are basically two answers:

Answer 1:

Spray a light coat of lacquer thinner, preferably with retarder added or after the humidity has gone down.  The blushing comes from entrapped moisture; thinning the top coat of dope gives the water a chance to escape.  As long as the water escapes faster than the paint dries (hence the desire for low humidity or retarder), then the blush will be gone.

Answer 2:

Sometimes spraying clear will fix the problem for the same reasons detailed above.  But sometimes you just trap the blush.  How often?  I dunno -- it's been 30 years since I've sprayed dope, and I never got super accomplished at it then.  So I'm just parroting answers I've read here, while wondering why the real painters haven't weighed in.

The nice thing about answer 1 is that as long as you don't spray on such a heavy coat that the color runs, you aren't doing any permanent damage.

I am not weighing in on this because I dont use dope where it shows,, and like you Tim, I would be parroting answers from others..

James,, there is a TON of info on here about blushing, its causes, and how to overcome it, perhaps some time with the search feature would pay dividends?

On most recent finish (Olympic) for the 1st time I worked up the courage to spray a 90% thinner 10% retarder mix to address some minor blushing.  Was amazed how well it work.    Back off distance of gun from the surface 2-3 times of your normal distance to just get a lite misting on the surface.
I think its important when doing this to use a quality gun that produces fine atomization.

I had the same problem recently and tried spraying thinner mixed some clear(90 thinner, 10% clear). The blushing would go away in one place only to re-appear in another. I didn't have access to retarder either and pretty much resigned myself to the model being "funny" looking.

When I got to clear, I still had major blushing problems regardless of what I tried. Dry, wet - it didn't matter! Then I noticed something  interesting: if I keep the gun further back than I usually do, the blushing goes away!

As a result, I was able to eliminate ALL blushing by just keeping the gun further back. Of course over-spray becomes an issue(more paint wasted) plus it takes longer to get the surface the same "wet" look that I look for when spraying.
